Happy Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary!
Today we celebrate the proud legacy of service, safety, and dedication that began June 23, 1939, when Congress created the Coast Guard Reserve, a volunteer force of civilian boaters committed to keeping America’s waterways safe.
In 1941, the name changed to the Coast Guard Auxiliary, marking the birth of the organization we honor today.
Throughout World War II, more than 50,000 volunteers stepped up to patrol our coasts, guard our ports, and rescue downed pilots. Their courage and commitment set the foundation for generations to follow.
From post‑war years to the present, the Auxiliary has remained a steadfast force for:
Public boating safety education
Environmental protection
Disaster relief and community support
Thank you to all past and present Auxiliarists whose service continues to protect lives and strengthen our nation.
