Our next session is coming up. Make sure you don't miss it!

As our Wasted Ground webinar continues, we will talk about the Jackson Law and why this legislation matters in ensuring local approval is sought before constructing new landfills. We will learn more about the law in a conversation with an attorney, a community member, and a community leader. We will reflect upon how the law has been used in some TN counties to protect the community and environment from potentially harmful landfills. Join us for episode two and find out if your local jurisdiction is protected by the Jackson Law and if not, what to do about it.

Join us virtually for this next learning session!

Saturday, October 10, 2026 | 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM ET

Join us for a 3.2-mile moderate-to-strenuous hike along the River Bluff Trail at the TVA Small Wild Area below Norris Dam, where we will explore the science and history of one of Tennessee's most significant natural landscapes while the forest puts on its annual fall display.

The Hike
We will hike alongside sections of the Clinch River, gaining and losing about 500 feet of elevation over 3 to 4 hours. Hiking poles are strongly recommended for anyone with uphill or downhill sensitivity. Sturdy shoes, water, layers, and snacks are also encouraged.

Meet at the River Bluff Trail trailhead at 10:00 AM ET. Parking at the trailhead is available but limited, so plan to arrive early or carpool when possible.

Much of Middle Tennessee sits on limestone, and limestone dissolves. Where it's cracked, groundwater can move 100,000 times faster than it does through solid rock.

Chris Vanags of Vanderbilt explains why that makes it so hard to predict where pollution ends up, and why it matters where we put landfills.

From Episode 1 of Wasted Ground, a free Sierra Club Tennessee series on protecting our water and land.

Scientists poured dye into a sinkhole in Tennessee. A couple of days later it showed up in a spring 11 miles away.

Water underground here moves fast and far, and it doesn't stop at property lines. Whatever leaks into the ground in one county can end up in someone's well or spring in the next one.

That's from Ryan Jackwood of Harpeth Conservancy on Episode 1 of Wasted Ground, our free series on why Tennessee shouldn't become the nation's dumping ground.

Wildlife cannot survive without room to move. Across the country, roads, development, fences, and fragmented habitat are cutting animals off from the places they need to find food, water, shelter, and mates. For migratory species and wildlife adapting to a changing climate, these barriers can be the...
