**VOLUNTEERS NEEDED **
We feed the homeless on Thanksgiving! Additionally, we try to provide, toiletries, bottled water, blankets, clothing, warm showers, haircuts, etc. Come join us and help change someone's life...
This event is free and for all ages! Everyone is asked to bring the following:
1. A MEAT and/or SIDE DISH cooked and ready to serve, plus bottl
ed water! This is a potluck event. It can be as little as a side of vegetables or it can be three large bowls of your grandma’s famous “cranberry walnut stuffing”. (We need lots of bottled water this year! Also, we ALWAYS run out of Turkey and Ham first so PLEASE bring one cooked, sliced, and ready to serve to the event around 9 AM if you can.)
2. FIVE (5) SMALL TOILETRY KITS- that include a mini toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, and shampoo. You can get these items very inexpensively at $0.99 stores.
3. CLOTHING AND BLANKETS. Please bring any used blankets and/or gently used sweaters, jackets, shirts, socks, shoes, and beanies/hats for men, women, and children.
***If you can't bring anything, no worries- just bring a loving heart and a set of helping hands***
DETAILS:
We will begin setup and prep for the event at 9:00 AM. At this time we will designate leaders for specific sections as well as areas for drop-off/delivery pickup. At 10 AM we begin a large “conveyor belt” of food where we will begin to make the meals. We will box them up with care packages of toiletries and hygiene kits to be sent out. At around 10:30 AM the first vehicles begin to roll out in teams! We hit the riverbeds, the alleys, and the freeway overpasses, and sometimes we discover small villages of people in dirt fields and empty lots. We will pack and deliver until we are out of donations. We typically wrap up around 1 PM. Afterward, remaining donations will be given to various missions and shelters in the vicinity. They are always extremely grateful for these items. POSITIONS:
Early Birds … The day officially starts at 10 AM but there are a few of us who need to get there early to set things up, warm up the ovens, put tables up, etc… We are there as early as 9:00 AM. If you are available and want to join us, you are welcome. Kitchen Crew … for heating, warming, carving, and slicing. There is always work to do in the kitchen. It’s one of the messier jobs so we all roll up our sleeves. We have aprons and gloves. This is the nucleus of the event. Conveyor Belt Crew … this is where it all goes down. There are about 100 volunteers at any given moment on all sides of the tables putting food into “take out” containers with napkins, plastic ware, etc. It's fast, it's messy, and most of all it's FUN. Boxers … these are the people who handle the meals after they come off of the conveyor belt. They put the meals with all the extras like clothing, bottled water, toiletries, and hygiene kits. This is the last stop before delivery. Drivers … These are people that want to drive. We will fill your car with kits and volunteers. You can go out in two or three-car teams. We will coordinate an area with you that we think will be most effective. If you have friends, they can go in your car of course. When you are out of meals you can come back or begin your journey to the family Thanksgiving or back home! Cleaners … Every year we ask a small crew to stay behind with some of us and help put everything back to normal. It’s not that hard because everyone pitches in. But being the most unglamorous job it is very appreciated. You don't need to specify your position in advance. Just keep in mind what it is that you want to do when you arrive. It will help us get you right into action. Early birds just arrive early! Thanks so very much - We look forward to seeing y'all soon and pulling off our magical one-day affair! All the best,
~The Nashville Team
