Is federally supported beauty education truly serving its students? The focus must shift toward clear transparency and tangible career results. Success should be measured by student outcomes and workforce readiness, not just enrollment numbers. Strengthening these pillars will empower the next generation of stylists to succeed without being weighed down by immense debt. Join the conversation on educational accountability.

Congratulations to the state of Illinois! You now have access to an alternative pathway to licensure through beauty and grooming apprenticeships. Here is what you need to know…

We are planning an event down in the Evansville area this summer. It will be similar to the Mayday event, where we discuss the history of labor and solidarity economies in the beauty and grooming industry.

Are there any hairstylists or salon owners in the Evansville area who would like to help us coordinate and plan?

If so, please send an email to: [email protected]

Critical thinking—say less.

A few beauty schools closing may not be a bad thing. Help us share this video, since it is over 3 minutes, and the algorithm won't push it out, or message me to become a collaborator on the post.

Reposting this video because I’m seeing a TON of people talking about the loss of federal student aid within the industry. The Department of Labor is starting Pell grants on July 1st, meaning entry into the profession is changing. It is going to be filtered through apprenticeship programs hosted at high schools, technical schools, and salons. At the end of the day, the existing power structures within the industry are running a massive fear campaign to mobilize people and generate revenue “ to fight to overturn something” that will probably never happen. I’ve shortened this video so the Instagram algorithm will push it out. This video has another two minutes attached to it. If you wanna watch our full video, go to our page.

Beyond the Chair was proud to serve as an industry guide at today’s beauty and grooming apprenticeship workshop, helping demystify how apprenticeships work in salons and shops—and how we can build on apprenticeship programs toward a more modern, robust, and sustainable beauty and grooming industry.

This work is happening through real collaboration with incredible partners, including Atarashii Apprentice Program, Entrepreneurial Navigator, Art McDonald with Evansville Regional Economic Partnership, and Valerie Schmidt from the Southwest Indiana Workforce Board. This workshop was also made possible through the support of United Way of Southwestern Indiana’s Amplify! program, which helped convene partners, align resources, and create the conditions for this collaboration to move from idea to action.

We’re grateful for our partners in this initiative, and we’re excited to see what’s possible when education, workforce development, and community engagement align—because that’s when meaningful and sustainable change becomes possible.
