Thank you, Tiffanie Fletcher, for allowing us to continue the Annual African American Read-In activities at the Kirkpatrick Community Center. Dr. Ramona Wiggins read "Change Sings" by Amanda Gorman and "Crown" by Derek Barnes. "Change Sings" is a lyrical, uplifting picture book that follows a young girl who leads a group of children on a journey to create positive change in their community. "Crown" is a vibrant tribute to the confidence and pride that comes from a fresh haircut. Set in a barbershop—a cultural cornerstone in many Black communities—the book captures how a simple cut can make a boy feel powerful, seen, and unstoppable. Although the children were eager to head outside, something shifted as the stories unfolded. Seeing characters who looked like them reflected in the pages drew them in, and their excitement grew into genuine engagement. After the readings, several students volunteered to read the affirmation poem on their coloring sheets—an empowering reminder of their worth and the important role they play in our community.

In February, the National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc., Nashville Chapter celebrates the joy of reading by hosting a series of African American Read-Ins. This year, Sister Tylia Battle Jarmon kicked things off with a reading of Valerie Flournoy’s "The Patchwork Quilt," a gentle, beautifully illustrated story that wraps readers in warmth, creativity, and family connection. The book honors the bonds that hold generations together, making it a perfect choice for anyone who loves stories that feel like a hug. Thank you, Sister Tylia, for sharing your time, your voice, and your love of literacy with our community.
