Calling all Hendersonville volunteers: This Saturday, join the Cumberland River Compact and the Drakes Creek Watershed Foundation for a fun and impactful cleanup along Drakes Creek! Sign up today at https://cumberlandrivercompact.org/event/drakes-creek-cleanup-summer-2026/.

Volunteers will start at Memorial Park and work along the Hendersonville Greenway and into Drakes Creek Park. Lend your hand in making a big community impact for the waters of Hendersonville! This event is organized in partnership with the City of Hendersonville, Hendersonville Lakeshore Committee, Drakes Creek Watershed Foundation, and the Sumner County Health Department.

Did you know that Drakes Creek is a tributary of the Cumberland River? Your participation in this cleanup is part of a larger effort to enhance the health of the Cumberland – the source of drinking water for over 3 million people.

We’re hiring! Are you passionate about communications and ready to make an impact on the environment? Apply to work with the Cumberland River Compact as a Communications Coordinator in Nashville, Tennessee.

This entry-level role incorporates design, creative writing, photography, social media, and more to tell the story of the Compact’s work to improve water quality in the Cumberland River basin of Kentucky and Tennessee. You’ll work with a team of conservation professionals to promote exciting local initiatives like stream restoration, mine land reforestation, environmental education, depaving, and urban forestry.

This is a full-time, three-month interim position with the potential to become a permanent role, depending on organizational needs. This role is based at the Compact’s Germantown office but involves travel to project sites around Nashville and across the Cumberland River basin. We’re proud to share that the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has named the Cumberland River Compact as a recipient of the 2026 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Agriculture and Forestry!

The award was given for the Compact’s Grazing School - a program helping Tennessee farmers implement water‑friendly agricultural practices that improve soil health, reduce pollution, and strengthen farm operations.

Grazing School workshops are held twice a year in agricultural areas across TN and provide hands-on training in rotational grazing, pasture management, water quality protection, and animal health.

The Compact has directly supported 93 historically underserved farmers from across the Cumberland River basin through this program, while addressing some of Tennessee’s most pressing water quality challenges.

Thanks to TDEC for the recognition, and to the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (S-SARE) and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) for providing funding that makes Grazing School free for farmers. And thanks to the Tennessee farmers who have hosted, taught, and attended workshops!

Flowing through GEODIS park and past the Nashville Fairgrounds before it enters the Cumberland River, Browns Creek is a critical place to build green infrastructure and defend the quality of our drinking water. That’s why, earlier this year, the Cumberland River Compact began a new phase of restoration and conservation work along a 4.3-mile stretch of this important urban waterway.

Over the next two years, the Compact aims to complete several depave projects, replant one acre of riparian buffer, plant 300 large trees, construct several rain gardens, and host volunteer events - all to support the restoration of Browns Creek. This dedicated focus is supported by a grant from the State of Tennessee, funding from Oracle and Fallon Community Fund, and neighborhood groups throughout the watershed.

Calling all Tennessee teachers! 📣Are you (or do you know) an educator who loves getting students outdoors? The Cumberland River Compact’s annual Teacher Retreat returns September 12-13 this fall!

This two-day retreat in Cookeville gives educators immersive experiences with Tennessee’s water resources, explores cutting-edge strategies for engaging instruction, and provides lesson plans and activities to take home. The Teacher Retreat is open to 6-12th grade science teachers across Tennessee; visit https://cumberlandrivercompact.org/event/teacher-retreat-2026-water-in-tennessee/ to register now or share with a teacher in your life.

Attendees will receive a certificate for 9 professional learning hours. Free lodging may be available for out-of-town teachers.
