Exciting news from our neighbor to the north: Ohio!

Ohio’s Republican governor who used to be a really big fan of the death penalty has spoken out about how he now knows the policy does not serve his people. Evidence does not show the death penalty deters crime. It often causes harm to victims and certainly corrections officers tasked with carrying ex*****ons out.

Sign the petition asking Gov. DeWine to go one step further and grant clemency to the people on Ohio’s death row. Link in bio/comments.

Celebrating the wins when they come. Grateful the district court’s decision declaring the Alabama protocol unconstitutional was not overturned.

Other problems with Mr. Lee’s case include that the jury voted for life.

Time to on ALL Tennessee ex*****ons!

Read the article to learn more about the problematic protocol created by a commissioner who had the same problems in AZ before he came to TN. 🔗 in bio.

The recent botched, failed ex*****on of Tony Carruthers was foreseeable.

⏰ It’s time to ask Gov. Lee to press pause while the courts review the ex*****on protocol that not only led to Mr. Carruthers’ horrific experience but also to that of the victims’ families and the corrections staff who endured a “plan” gone terribly wrong.

Governor Bill Lee released an extremely disappointing statement this morning:

“After deliberate consideration of Tony Von Carruthers’ request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene.”

Tony Carruthers’ sister, Dr. Tonya Carruthers quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as she spoke to members of the governor’s staff during yesterday’s petition delivery, saying, “The time is always right to do what is right.”

TAKE ACTION NOW: Despite the governor’s statement, we must keep up the pressure for Governor Lee to do what is right! Mr. Carruthers’ attorneys are still pursuing a variety of legal options, but we will not let up on Governor Lee.

Please call Governor Lee at 615-741-2001. Tell him to stop this ex*****on and test the DNA evidence in the case of Tony Carruthers to ensure that an innocent man is not executed.

Join TADP, ACLU, NAACP Nashville Branch, Witness to Innocence, Catholic Mobilizing Network (CMN), Amnesty International USA (AIUSA), Free Hearts, Faith Leaders of Color Coalition (flocc), and other Tennesseans to tell Governor Lee: Stop Tony Carruthers' scheduled ex*****on and test the DNA evidence!

We need you to turn out on Monday to urge Governor Lee to act! Faith leaders please wear your clerical collars and stoles!!!

You can plan to arrive around 12:30 p.m. outside the entrance to the Cordell Hull Building on Rep. John Lewis Way (5th Avenue N).

The march will begin at 12:45 p.m. with a rally to follow around 1:00 in front of the Capitol steps across from Speaker Beth Harwell Plaza.
