Berrien Native Lives Through
Worst Hotel Fire in U.S. History

It was early morning hours of December 7, 1946, exactly five years after the Sneak Attack of Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the Atlanta hotel that was “Absolutely Fireproof” erupted in flames. Two and a half hours later, 119 guests of the Winecoff Hotel were dead and 60 more had terrible injuries from the worst hotel fire in U.S. history. And a Berrien native was right in the middle of it.
This Thursday evening at 7:00 at the Perry Memorial Library, the Berrien Historical Foundation will present another video episode in its “Stories from the Best Little Museum” series. Learn more about this tragic event, and two other fascinating Berrien historical stories in this 45-minute program. The public is invited and free admission. Presentation “Little Country Stores of Berrien”
Thursday August 21, 7:00 p.m. at Perry Memorial Library, Nashville, Georgia
One of the most nostalgic memories many folks have, is traveling the rural South Georgia landscape on a hot afternoon, coming across the occasional little country store, and getting a sudden hunger for an ice cold RC Cola and a Moon Pie.

Between 1930 and 1970 there were more than 30 of those stores spread throughout Berrien County. However, locating those little stores and their history is getting more difficult, as time has almost erased any sign of their existence, and the families that ran them.

This Thursday evening, August 21, the Berrien Historical Foundation will bring back some of those memories with a video presentation “Little Country Stores of Berrien” Episode One. The program starts at 7:00 at the Perry Memorial Library. Free admission and the public is invited. More information contact Bryan Shaw at 229-563-0586.
