- Tiny Needle, Big Impact πŸ’‰
In exotic mammal venipuncture, we often rely on insulin syringes and small-gauge needles β€” but what happens after the blood is collected matters just as much as the draw itself.

When transferring blood into tubes or making smears, always remove the needle first. Passing blood back through a small-gauge needle increases shear force, which can contribute to hemolysis.

Hemolyzed samples may skew biochemistry results, affect PCV/TP readings, compromise smear quality, and sometimes mean the patient needs to be redrawn β€” extra stress for a patient who may already be small, fragile, or clinically unstable.

As a general rule of thumb, healthy exotic mammals may tolerate collection of approximately 0.7–1% of body weight in mL β€” for example, a 100 g patient β‰ˆ 0.7–1 mL of blood. Always collect less if the patient is compromised, dehydrated, anemic, or unstable.

Small technique changes can make a big difference for both sample quality and patient welfare.

Student Event Spotlight: Texas A&M ZEW Wet Lab! 🩺

AEMV was proud to support the 12th Annual Zoo, Exotics, and Wildlife Wet Lab at Texas A&M University, held January 31–February 1, 2026.

Each year, the ZEW Wet Lab gives veterinary students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a variety of exotic animals while learning from veterinarians working in different areas of exotic animal practice.

Hands-on opportunities like these help students build practical skills, confidence, and early connections within the exotic animal veterinary community.

AEMV is committed to supporting student-led educational opportunities that advance exotic companion mammal medicine.
