Harlan is in the coal mining area of the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Kentucky. started in 1999 when the high school youth from Priest Lake Presbyterian Church were looking for a mission project. They were led to Harlan, Kentucky which is in the Appalachian Mountains. On their first trip they were moved to tears and compassion by the poverty they experienced, and so Project J.O.Y. God had spok
en to these young people with a clear call to provide help in this area that was so close to them, but so much in need. While traveling home from Harlan a clear resolve was made that this was to be the Youth Ministry in coming years. A bond had been made between Priest Lake and Harlan. This was the start of a project that would grow. The mustard seed had been planted from which a mighty tree would grow. In 1999, 11 young people, their leaders, and members of Priest Lake Presbyterian Church went to Harlan with 40 food boxes, 70 gift boxes, and clothing. has evolved over the years. The youth and members of PLPC have been joined by members of 21 other churches in the area. Each year we now supply 400 food boxes, 1,200 learning bags, a large amount of clothing and shoes, and over 2,000 blankets and linens.
