Root Nashville is a public-private campaign, led by the Cumberland River Compact and Metro Nashville, to plant 500,000 trees across Davidson County by 2050.

Way to go, Nashville! 🎉🌳 We’re proud to announce that a whopping 7,378 trees were ordered for neighborhood yards via the Root Nashville campaign this summer. That’s 7,378 large trees that will soon become a part of our city’s canopy, shading our streets and improving the health of our air and water.

We smashed the campaign’s order total from last year, and it’s all thanks to dedicated Nashvillians who have signed on to add trees to their own yards. If that’s you, you should’ve received a confirmation email for your order after placing it (check your spam inbox!); later this month, look out for another email from Root Nashville announcing your expected delivery week.

Got a large yard and looking to branch out? The Root Nashville campaign is still offering free trees to Nashville residents through August 31, and extra brownie points go to anyone interested in planting two of the biggest available species: sycamores and shingle oaks!

These gentle giants account for only 10% of Root Nashville trees ordered so far, but it’s not for lack of charm or practicality; while they need a little extra room to grow, they make it worthwhile with extra shade, curb appeal, and environmental benefits.

FREE TREES for Davidson County residents! It’s that time of year again: visit https://rootnashville.org/get-free-trees to order up to 3 large native trees for your yard, courtesy of Root Nashville. This year, Nashvillians can choose from seven different species including tulip poplars, sycamores, serviceberries, and more.

Big and small, flowering and fruiting, they all have a place in our city’s vibrant ecosystem and can bring incredible benefits to your home and neighborhood. Announcing the final tree in the Root Nashville 2026 species lineup: the thornless honeylocust! ✨

Honeylocust trees are prized for their fine-textured foliage that creates an airy canopy and light, filtered shade. When found in the wild, these trees are notorious for their large, sharp thorns— however, the varietal grown at Root Nashville’s nursery is completely thornless and safe for kids or pets.

These fast-growing trees are highly tolerant of urban conditions, compacted soils, and drought, making them a dependable option for locations where other trees struggle to grow. In fall, honeylocust foliage turns a stunning bright yellow, and the small leaves disperse quickly once they drop - adding color without creating heavy cleanup.

Announcing the second to last tree in this season’s Root Nashville catalog: the sycamore! This hydrated queen is common to much of the southeastern U.S. and is routinely planted as a shade tree. Sycamores are prized for their unique, colorfully patterned bark, which provides visual interest at all times of the year.

One of the largest hardwood trees in North America, they can reach heights of over 100 ft - so plant this tree with plenty of room around and above it! Sycamores grow well in moist soils, and their intertwining roots are effective for streambank stabilization and erosion reduction. Leaf color is a stunning yellow and bronze in the fall.

Large young sycamore trees will be available for free to Davidson County residents starting on Monday, courtesy of the Root Nashville campaign. Mark your calendars!

If your girl is sturdy, reliable, and 40-60 feet tall, that’s not your girl… that’s the Shingle Oak! Available for free in Davidson County through Root Nashville this year, shingle oaks are a great tree choice for people who want durability, longevity, and a classic silhouette.

These unique native shade trees have a look that sets them apart from other oaks: unlike many oaks with deeply cut or lobed foliage, their leaves are long and unlobed, giving the canopy a smoother, more uniform look through the summer. Like other oaks, these trees are strong and breakage-resistant, and offer valuable habitat for wildlife. 🐿️ Their rounded canopies cast steady, dependable shade, and their tolerance of clay soils, periodic flooding, and drought makes them a reliable choice for a wide range of Middle Tennessee yards.

Give a warm welcome to the 2026 cohort of Root Nashville Neighborhood Planting Captains! 🎉

This year, a total of 89 above-and-beyond volunteers were selected for the Planting Captain program and will spend the next three months advocating for free trees in their own neighborhoods all over Davidson County. Some of them are first-time captains, and some of them have been returning for up to 5 years now— but one thing they all have in common is their passion for growing Nashville’s tree canopy and improving the quality of life in their communities.

Let’s hear it for the umbrella magnolia: available for the first time, free of charge, to Davidson County residents through Root Nashville this summer! ☂️⛱️🎉

The umbrella magnolia is a native understory tree with a unique, whimsical look. It stands out for its exceptionally large leaves, which cluster at the ends of branches like the spokes of an umbrella - creating a lush, almost tropical presence in the landscape. Umbrella magnolias thrive in the shade, with consistent moisture and organically rich soil. Because their large leaves can tear in strong winds, it’s best to plant them in sheltered areas such as the north or east side of a home, near a woodland edge, or within a protected courtyard. If your yard has the right conditions for this unique little tree, it could be a match made in heaven!
