Journey to Nonprofit

Ryan Washington started Foresight Community with an ambitious goal in mind: bringing fitness, nutrition education, and financial literacy to the communities that are most affected without it.

While working with clients 1:1 in low-income communities through a fitness program, Ryan realized that his clients had a lot of questions that couldn’t fit into their one hour session. These sessions were free to the client but were offered only one time by the income-restricted apartment communities where they resided. By the end of the session, he would be inundated with questions about carbohydrates and sugars that he assumed everyone knew. That’s when he realized that this vital health information was a luxury.

The motivation and need were there. It became evident that access was the problem. A number of barriers stood in the way between them and the healthy lifestyle they desired but there was one constant: money. The members of the community simply could not afford to continue the classes. That’s how a company that focused on fitness and nutrition expanded to include finances.

How would the lives of these clients look if these classes were available to them regularly? If someone sat down with them and customized fitness plans, discussed the way food choices affected health, and gave them ideas and incentives to better manage their money? Ryan wanted to find out.

Ryan designed a number of classes on fitness, nutrition, and financial wellness. Foresight provides these classes at no cost to income-restricted communities. It empowers its clients by equipping them with information and encouraging them to follow through to improve their health and their relationship with money.

Along with the classes, Foresight Community offers two additional programs:

The Rent Rebate program is a financial incentive for those participating in the classes. Through this program, Foresight works in partnership with the apartment complexes to offer rental assistance.

Tutor for Teens will be available to youth in middle school and high school in Fall 2018. This program is an effort to improve grades of participants and reinforce the importance of education.

Through its many programs, Foresight Community’s mission is clear: to educate and empower. The reward is in changing the lives of the people it serves.
