Inspired by all of the wonderful missionaries that I meet out in this big world. Their faith and determination to love and serve forever amaze me!
WHAT I'M DOING HERE
Mama, I wrote you that first letter the old-fashioned way
In the living room of the mission home my very first day
And it was all that I could do to just hold back the tears
As I sat there wondering what I’m doing here
My trainer was 5th generation pioneer stock
Testimony solid as a big hunk of Utah rock
And I stood there in his shadow trying to show no fear
Just wondering what I’m doing here
And I’m doing all I can to love with my heart wide open
And find the kind of faith you’ve always shown
You told me, “Sometimes you’ve got go there
before the reasons become clear”
I hope so, cause I’d like to know what I’m doing here
Well the food I’ve been eatin’ ain’t what I’m used to
I mean I eat it, but Mama, they don’t make it like you do
And we’re working hard, really hard, but no one seems to care
And I can’t help wondering what I’m doing here
Guess I’ve been out quite a while now
Cause this is my fifth apartment
Yeah, you gauge a missionary’s age by color of their garments
And sometimes it feels like I belong
But some days it still feels weird
And I contemplate what I’m doing here
And I’m doing all I can to love with my heart wide open
And it’s less and less the winds of doubt do blow
And I’m sure your prayers are filling up
Heavenly Father’s ears
And sometimes I wonder if you wonder
What I’m doing here
Someone that we never, ever would have guessed
Could welcome the love of God within their chest
Just rose up from the water smiling ear to ear
And just like these tears I’m cryin’ it’s finally crystal clear
Oh Mama, what I’m doing here
