Love that it’s having a great time, hate that it’s trying to ruin all the kiln shelves 😒

We’ve maybe removed floating blue until we can figure out why it’s been giving us so many problems 😅 it could be that we had to substitute a glaze ingredient, it could be the clay body we’ve switched to, maybe it just doesn’t like being layered, or like three other options. The nice thing about making glazes in studio is that we know the exact ingredients and can run tests, trouble shoot, and make tweaks a little more easily.

I dunno about you, but I’d watch that documentary. There’s a really good reason pottery draws people in!

We have a lot of screens in our lives. All the time really. You can’t really do that while making pottery. It requires your hands and your attention. It’s tactile and focused. It’s social or a good quiet time. It’s vexing but rewarding. It’s definitely worth your time and a try. To us, it makes a lot of sense that people would try pottery and pick it up as their new hobby

Just a quick video for yall on this fine How TO-sday! Checking specific gravity of glazes

Why does it matter? Applying glaze too thick can cause a whole variety of issues, but it’s not just dipping too long or adding too many layers. Sometimes the water content of the glaze has evaporated enough that it’s too thick before it even touches your piece.

Checking your glaze can be as simple as dipping your finger in and seeing how well it sticks, but sometimes you need something a little more science-y than a vibe check.

Recap: tare out the weight of the graduated cylinder, fill glaze to the 100ml line. Most glazes should fall between 140 and 150 (1.4 and 1.5 if you do that math all the way), but some are a little different. Here we were on the higher side when we wanted to be on the lower side, so we added water, remixed, and measured again with a clean cylinder.

If you have any other questions, ask Brad Henderson because he makes all our glazes and Sarah is still learning 😅
