GET TO KNOW THE BOARD: ALBERT BEDOY

For Albert, there’s nothing quite like archery elk hunting in Arizona. He loves the preparation, scouting, miles in the mountains, and the challenge of getting close to elk in some of Arizona’s most incredible country.

But some of his favorite hunting memories aren’t his own.

Watching both of his sons experience their first successful hunts is something he’ll never forget. Seeing their excitement, nerves, and pride helped strengthen his passion for youth hunting and making sure the next generation has the same opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

That passion is also what brought Albert to the SCI Phoenix Chapter. He wanted to do more than simply enjoy hunting himself. He wanted to help protect our hunting heritage and give back through conservation, youth programs, archery and shooting programs, education, and outdoor experiences.

Albert wishes more people understood that SCI is about much more than trophies or hunting in Africa. Hunters play an important role in wildlife conservation, habitat preservation, responsible wildlife management, and keeping future generations connected to the outdoors.

His advice to young and new hunters?

“Don’t let the harvest be the sole measure of a successful hunt. Take the time to learn, listen, scout, and truly appreciate the experience.”

He also believes every hunter has a responsibility to become a steward of the outdoors and leave our hunting traditions and the places we enjoy better than we found them.

And what’s still on Albert’s bucket list? Africa is definitely near the top. But just as important to him are more hunts with his family, introducing young people to the outdoors, and creating memories that go far beyond the trophy.

Thanks, Albert, for everything you do for SCI Phoenix and for helping pass our hunting heritage on to the next generation.

GET TO KNOW THE BOARD: Bobby Boido

1. What’s your favorite type of hunting or favorite hunting season, and why?

My favorite type of hunting is any time and anywhere in the world. I’ve been all over the US, Mexico and Canada. I’ve been to Africa twice and I have hunted with a bow, muzzleloader and rifle. Here in the US, I have to say hunting elk in September is probably the most exciting when the bull elk are bugling away. Stalking in on a big ole bull who throws caution to the wind and getting within 20 yards is heart-stopping excitement. A close second is glassing up a Coues buck and waiting hours on end for the buck to stand up for a shot.

2. What’s one hunt or outdoor experience you’ll never forget?

It’s a hard question to answer due to my many years of hunting in different situations, including the most inclement weather. I hunted for 5 days on Kodiak Island for Sitka blacktail deer. Our base camp was an 80’ fishing boat. Every day was a challenge in itself to get off the boat into a 20’ skiff and getting back on when the Bering Sea was at its worst.

Flying into a lake in the middle of nowhere in the Yukon Territory to hunt Dall sheep, then riding 30 miles to set up our base camp, all the while in grizzly bear country, the outfitter had been mauled by a grizzly bear 3 years earlier, was another adventure high on my list of hunts.

One can measure success by taking the animal you are after. While I did take these animals, the real success was surviving these conditions and adventures.

3. Why did you decide to get involved with the SCI Phoenix Chapter and become a board member?

The board of directors who brought this chapter back to life hired me to be the Executive Director and run the everyday aspects of the chapter. Together we have built what I see as the best conservation organization in the Phoenix area and soon to be the best in Arizona.

Having the liberty of using the monies the chapter raises for conservation, education & advocacy is one big reason to be a major part and decision maker on the Phoenix Chapter Board.

4. What’s something you wish more people knew about SCI or our Phoenix Chapter?

What non-members and members alike need to know is that SCI and the Phoenix Chapter are not animal specific, and we are not just a group of hunters who only want to hunt in Africa.

As in my response to question 3, the chapter is in charge of how we spend our hard-earned monies we raise, and we do not have to answer to a non-Arizona organization based in another state.

5. If you could give one piece of advice to a young or new hunter, what would it be?

Be aware that SCI is the leading hunting & conservation group in the world, and young hunters should know that conservation and hunting come through becoming a member of SCI and knowing that the sky is the limit on the opportunities provided by joining the Phoenix Chapter and getting involved in the youth camps and volunteering at the banquet and other events we hold and participate in.

6. What’s still on your hunting bucket list?

I still want to hunt the buffaloes of the world, Cape buffalo in Africa, water buffalo in Australia, buffalo in Argentina.

Locally, my focus is on Little Man Denton to see that he continues to be an ethical hunter and enjoys the successes of being outdoors and enjoys the freedom to hunt.
