Our 2026 legislative recap is here with a high-level look at proposed bills related to homelessness, tenants' rights, and housing.

Check out the bills that passed ➡ then head over to our latest blog post to learn about the eight bills that failed yet provide a useful roadmap for our work in 2027 (link in bio).

This was a difficult session for so many communities across the state, and this recap reminds us that there's much more work ahead to protect the rights of all Tennesseans.⚖️

📍West End United Methodist Church

You're invited to join us on June 26 for our next training!

Motivational Interviewing is a person-centered, strength-based engagement model that helps people identify their own motivation to positively change their lives. This training is designed to support service providers with evidence-based practices to understand why people change and how we can accompany them along the way.

Participants can expect an interactive environment where they can share personal experience and learn alongside community.

Such a joy to be with David as he moved in recently!

We've been working with David since April 2025, and it took until February 2026 for him to get a referral just to apply for a section eight voucher. This shows just how long securing housing can take, and the timeline varies for everyone. Through every step, David kept us laughing with his signature humor.🌟

🔊 Legislative advocacy update!

Earlier this year, we highlighted the deadly force bill (HB1802 / SB1847) that would have authorized deadly force for “actual or attempted trespassing,” burglary, robbery, arson, and more.

This bill places private property over human life and makes us all less safe, but because of our collective advocacy efforts with Housing for All TN and Moms Demand Action - TN, we were able to get "actual or attempted trespassing" amended out of this bill! This reduces the chance that Tennesseans who are unhoused will be negatively impacted.

While there were wins this session, we hold those alongside the collective losses when it comes to immigration, trans rights, education, and so much more. We’ll have a more comprehensive legislative round-up to share soon.

🚨Did you know that city leaders want to address homelessness downtown by funding more policing? This puts our most vulnerable neighbors at risk, so we're coming together to demand alternatives!

How you can help:

☑️ Share this post and tag your council member.

☑️ Sign on to our individual and organizational letter before April 29 to tell Metro Council and the Mayor's Office to reject more funding for policing and instead invest in alternatives that are proven by experience and data: https://bit.ly/48gTQVg and in bio).

☑️ Follow Open Table Nashville and subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated as the budget is finalized next week (link in bio).

Over the years, we've gotten many requests for an interactive, next-level training on de-escalation. That's why we've created our first Advanced Trauma Informed De-Escalation session on April 27 from 5-8 p.m.

Participants will practice:
💡Active listening skills for times of crisis.
💡Intervention strategies.
💡Action focused on safety.
💡Effective body language and more!

We’ll also discuss tools for self-regulation as we work through different scenarios.

Even though this session is advanced, *beginners are welcome!* If you haven't attended our basic training, we'll email you our de-escalation guide and review foundational skills first.

Our friend Cindy made this sign for her car and it speaks so well to how difficult it is to find safe, affordable housing in Nashville.

We’ve been working with Cindy for almost a year, and unfortunately her experience being stuck on a waiting list is all too common for people living on the street.

Cindy’s story reminds us that being homeless is not a crime, it’s not a moral failure, and that all people deserve care and respect.

We’re so grateful to walk alongside her and to be able to share her story 🫶🏻

The 3rd annual Walk With OTN distance challenge kicks off on April 1st, and registration is open NOW! 💛👟

Many of our friends spend the majority of the day on their feet, often walking 10-15 miles in a single day. We're challenging you to join us in walking 15 miles in the month of April to help raise $20,000 for our street outreach and advocacy efforts.

Sign up for the distance challenge, and ask your friends and family to sponsor you as you track your miles throughout the month. You can even team up with your friends or coworkers and set a group fundraising goal! On May 2nd, we'll come together at West Park to walk one last mile together, celebrate OTN, and enjoy a beautiful day in the park as a community!

Head to the link in our bio to learn more, register for the distance challenge, or donate to help us reach our goal!
