The Center for Nonprofit Excellence's annual Salute to Excellence awards celebrate outstanding leadership, impact, innovation, and achievement across Middle Tennessee. We're thrilled to see so many Maddox partners among the finalists, and we're cheering for every one of them.

Maddox presents Connected Communities: Bridging Faith, Community & Economic Mobility with Rev. Heber Brown of the Black Church Food Security Network.

When churches, community organizations, and neighbors work together, the results go beyond a meal. They include shared resources, stronger local food systems, and new opportunities for families. Join us as Rev. Brown shares how this work is happening for us to learn from right here in Middle Tennessee.

As Joseph enters his tenth year at the Maddox Fund, he'll be taking a sabbatical. He'll be traveling across East Asia on his bike, finding time to rest, and reflect on the work he's done. Check out some of his thoughts on our blog:

Each year, the Nashville Public Education Foundation recognizes standout organizations with the Thomas J. Sherrard Inspiring Innovation Award, honoring the educators and changemakers pushing Nashville's education landscape forward. This award celebrates bold, creative approaches to closing opportunity gaps for Nashville students.

This year, we're beyond proud that both honorees, DYMON in the Rough and Girls Write Nashville, are partners in our Middle Tennessee work. Their dedication to empowering young people through mentorship, creative expression, and confidence building is exactly the kind of innovation Nashville needs.

🦢 What can geese teach us about leadership?

Geese trade off leadership roles mid flight, sharing the work of cutting through the wind so the whole flock can go farther. Coyotes play with and protect one another, building trust through connection.

At the Dan and Margaret Maddox Fund, we're reminded that nature has a lot to teach us about community. When we truly engage our partners, staff, and board, when we listen to and trust their lived expertise, we thrive. No one gets left behind, and everyone gets a turn to lead.

What we learn from grasslands: diversity feeds us 🌾

The many varieties of grass and wildflowers, cross-pollinated by bees and breezes, show us how symbiotic relationships sustain healthy systems. Grassland diversity contributes to soil health, water quality, carbon storage, and wildlife habitat.

The Maddox Fund promotes equity and justice by celebrating diversity, finding joy in cross-pollinated ideas, and advocating for just systems, ecological and otherwise, when they're threatened. We nurture an environment of belonging for all people.

What we learn from trees 🌲

Below ground, tree roots intertwine for strength and survival. When the wind blows, they hold each other fast.

At Maddox, we take our cue from trees, believing we're stronger together, rooted in our shared vision, mission, and values while reaching for our shared piece of the sky. Like trees, our well-being is wrapped up in an inescapable network of mutuality, whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.
