February is Pet Dental Health Care month which means it's a good time to pay some extra attention to your pet's teeth and gums. Did you know that if left untreated, plaque and tartar buildup can progress to painful periodontal disease. The bacteria from periodontal disease can spread to other organs and cause illnesses. More than 85 percent of cats and dogs over four years old are affected by periodontal disease. In the month of February, Paws 4 Health will be posting tips and recipes to help keep your pets teeth and gums as healthy. You might be surprised at how easy that can be!!

Oral health in older pets is probably the most common reason for a vet visit. Almost 70% of older pets have some sort of oral health issues and it doesn't just originate in the mouth. Oral diseases both in humans and pets can be systemic diseases that can originate in the kidneys or liver, be from heart disease, lung disease, diabetes complications, problems during pregnancy, or and even cancer. A great preventative and maintenance ingredient that can be added to your pet's diet is COCONUT OIL! Recent research shows that coconut oil can be used in the treatment and prevention of many ailments. For oral health, coconut oil can be used every day on your pets teeth and gums.
Coconut oil is a natural ANTIBACTERIAL. It can improve your dogs breath, help with digestion, excellent for skin and coat and even promote energy. Approx. 1/4 tsp. per 10lbs per day. Remember, you should ALWAYS have your pets checked by your veterinarian for major underlying problems.

What age do you consider to be a "senior" pet? The word "senior" means something different depending upon who you are talking to. If you are speaking with a veterinarian, they will tell you that your pet is considered senior when they have lived over 25% of their life expectancy taking into consideration that larger breeds tend not to live as long as smaller breeds in dogs and certain breeds of cat tend to live longer than others; however, with the addition of better foods and medical care, it is not uncommon for cats to live to be 18 years old and dogs the same or longer. November is Adopt a Senior Pet month and Paws 4 Health would like to encourage you think about adopting an "older" pet into your home. These are animals with developed personalities and social skills with lots of life and love to give. If you already have a senior pet, follow us here on Facebook for the month of November as we share some recipes and helpful tricks and tips to keep our older pets in the best of health!!

I've spoken of this in several posts before but I have had so many people come to me asking about what to do for pets with upset stomachs, problems with digestion, diarrhea etc...that I thought I would touch on it again. There are several good remedies that are natural and not unpleasant for you to give or the animal to take. My top suggestion is PROBIOTICS. All animals (including human animals) are meant to develop and maintain a healthy amount of "good" bacteria. Many factors can cause a depletion of this good bacteria which is essential to help fight against disease. A healthy digestive system reduces the chances of infection, protects again allergic reactions, improves cholesterol levels, helps reduce bowel problems, and generally improves the overall health and longevity of an animal. Ask your veterinarian what they would recommend to increase probiotics for your pet. One of my favorites is vanilla, non-dairy yogurt. The concentration of probiotics is not huge in yogurt but it is certainly a way to begin to introduce them into your pets diet, it is good tasting and easily taken by dogs and cats. If you do not know if your pet is lactose intolerant, the non-dairy yogurt is a great option. STAY TUNED FOR MORE TUMMY TALK IN POSTS COMING SOON!!

Did you know that counting calories for your pets is as important as counting calories for ourselves?
A small, low-activity dog may only need about 185 to 370 calories daily, while a large pooch between 67 to 88 pounds may need between 1,000 to 2,000 calories, depending on activity level and gender. A healthy 10-pound kitty needs just 220 to 350 calories a day.
When feeding your pets (no matter whether you cook for them or just supplement cooked food with their regular kibble) you need to make sure that the calories they receive are from healthy sources. Limit the amount of sugar and fat and focus on vegetables and protein. EXAMPLE: a medium sized milkbone contains 45 calories. A raw carrot is 3. Carrots are actually sweet to your dog and most enjoy them!!

Thank you to all of the faithful Paws 4 Health fans that have stuck with me while I began and grew our animal rescue - Music City Animal Rescue. Now beginning our third year, the rescue is coming together well with many dedicated fosters and volunteers and a wonderful board of directors. I think I can finally get back to the other side of my dream - to not only RESCUE animals in need, but to help make them and keep them as healthy as they can be and give them long lives with their forever families. After selling close to 2,000 copies of my first book "Healthy Cooking, Healthy Living for your Dog" I am compiling recipes and ideas for a companion book for many of our pets, not just dogs. I think this will be an interesting and helpful guide for everyone who is searching for new and better ways to keep our pets healthy and happy! Stay tuned as the book takes shape. Promising more posts and updates too!!
