"The new campaign may be centered on finding Adie’s lost bones, but Fife officials also hope to use it to raise a broader awareness of the terrible injustices perpetrated against some 3,800 men and women who were accused of witchcraft in Scotland between 1563 to 1736, when the country’s Witchcraft Act was enforced."

Officials in Fife have put out a call for the remains of Lilias Adie, who died in prison in the early 1700s after being accused of witchcraft

"In her investigations into the causes of blindness, she discovered that poor people were more likely than the rich to be blind, and soon connected the mistreatment of the blind to the oppression of workers, women, and other groups, leading her to embrace socialism, feminism, and pacifism."

Here’s what they don’t teach: When the blind-deaf visionary learned that poor people were more likely to be blind than others, she set off down a pacifist, socialist path that broke the boundaries of her time—and continues to challenge ours today.

“This was before there was a concept of sexual orientation the way that we know it today,” said Lizzie Ehrenhalt, co-editor of the book. “That was really being invented right at the time they were writing letters in the 1890s, because that’s when sexology as a field gets going.”

Rose Cleveland declared her passion for the woman she had a relationship with spanning three decades in letter after letter.

Production has officially begun on the Tennessee Women's History Calendar...and HERE'S THE FIRST GLIMPSE! We have 65% of the calendar set. That's 238 stories of Tennessee women, events, and places. Some of them new, some of them tried-and-true, but all of them as they've never been told before! This will be the largest part of March to the 19th. We will have major production costs, including image permissions and video editing production. Phase II of March to the 19th is wrapping up...and so now all your donations will go directly to building the Tennessee Women's History Calendar. Thank you for your support!

“Interpreting this history is both rewarding and challenging. As with all American history, suffrage comes with many victories and inspiring narratives, but it also comes with complexities and flaws,” said Rebecca Price, Chick History President/CEO. “It is our hope that public historians and museum professionals will apply this Value Statement to their 2020 programming and develop robust interpretation that offers deeper historic understandings of the multiplicities and inequalities of suffrage in America.”
