Be weather aware! This winter storm is changing conditions by the hour! The forecast you heard this morning has changed this afternoon and will again tonight! Get all your errands taken care of before Friday night. Stay off the roads Saturday and Sunday! Enjoy a snowy weekend and binge watch on movies or tv shows!

Be safe! Do not run generators indoors, or inside a garage (even with the garage door open!) or near any window/door outside. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer!

Stay Safe During Winter Weather!
Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Only use generators and grills outdoors and away from windows and never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven. Using an oven or stovetop can also increase the risk of fires, burns and could damage the appliance.

There are people who want to be prepared and look into amateur radio as an option. Many find the licensing requirements and equipment costs as prohibitive. But did you know there is an alternative communications method that you may find easier to get into?

GMRS, or General Mobile Radio Service, is a licensed radio service in the United States designed for short- to medium-range two-way communication. It operates in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band around 462 and 467 MHz and is popular among families, outdoor enthusiasts, and emergency preparedness groups due to its reliability and ease of use.

Advantages of GMRS:

Extended Range: Compared to FRS (Family Radio Service), GMRS allows for higher power (up to 50 watts), which significantly increases communication range, especially with the use of repeaters.

Use of Repeaters: GMRS users can legally access repeaters, which are used to extend coverage even further, especially in hilly or urban terrain.

Versatile Equipment: GMRS supports handheld radios, mobile units, and base stations, giving users flexibility depending on their needs.

Family-Friendly: A single GMRS license covers the entire immediate family, making it cost-effective for group use.

Interoperability: GMRS radios can often communicate with compatible FRS radios on shared frequencies, though with limitations based on power and features.

License Requirements:
To use GMRS, individuals must obtain a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). There is no exam required—just an online application and fee (typically around $35 for a 10-year license). The license covers the individual and their immediate family members, including spouses, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and in-laws.

GMRS is ideal for anyone needing dependable, local communication without relying on cell towers or internet infrastructure, making it a valuable tool for recreation, coordination, and emergency readiness.

Well the weather did not cooperate yesterday and we made 0 contacts for field day. But on a positive note we had a great turnout so glad to see everyone. We had some good food and great conversation. So all things said I think it was a great day. There is always next year for the contacts.
