She did everything right. And she still almost lost it all.
This mom escaped a dangerous domestic violence situation while her twin girls were placed in foster care. From that moment on, she was unstoppable, showing up to every court date, every medical appointment at Vanderbilt, learning to manage her daughter's newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes, and holding down a job, all while meeting every single expectation from the Department of Children's Services.
She was weeks away from a trial home visit. Her girls were almost home.
Then her bank account was hacked. Her entire paycheck was gone. And her electric bill came due.
With a shutoff notice arriving the next morning, everything she'd worked for was at risk. No electricity meant no unsupervised visits in her home. No visits meant delays in reunification. More fees. More time apart from her daughters.
TAK paid the bill in full, $256.10, so she could start fresh.
Her social worker shared what happened next:
π¬ "The mom cried when I told her the bill was taken care of in full. She asked who she needed to pay back when she gets paid. I told her to use her money to catch up on other things or to buy something the girls need."
One utility bill. One yes. A mama who gets to keep going.
This is why we do what we do: to be a bridge for families who are truly trying their best and still sometimes come up short.
Have you ever seen one small act of generosity change the entire trajectory of someone's story? We'd love to hear it in the comments. π
