Yes. Mustangs can make excellent riding horses. Their natural surefootedness, intelligence, and versatility allow them to excel in disciplines ranging from trail riding and ranch work to dressage, jumping, and endurance. With patient training and a strong partnership, many adopters find that mustangs become willing, dependable lifelong companions.

Every great riding horse starts with an opportunity. ❤️ Support the Mustang Heritage Foundation and help create more chances for mustangs and burros to thrive through education, events, and lifelong homes.

What are some popular in-hand classes for horses?

In-hand horses can compete in halter, showmanship, trail, obstacle, liberty, and model classes—proving there’s plenty to do beyond riding. Many horses and mustangs excel in these classes, building confidence, communication, and partnership from the ground.

📸 What does your horse do best out of the saddle? Share a photo or video of your favorite in-hand activity in the comments!

What is a Mustang Horse?

A Mustang is a free-roaming horse of the American West, descended from horses brought to North America by Spanish explorers more than 500 years ago. Over generations, these horses adapted to some of the toughest landscapes in the country, developing the intelligence, athleticism, and resilience they’re known for today.

Protected by law since 1971, American Mustangs are a living symbol of our nation’s heritage. Through adoption programs, training opportunities, and education, these remarkable horses are finding purpose and partnership in homes across the country.

❤️ Want to help keep Mustangs in good homes and create more opportunities for their future? Support the work of the Mustang Heritage Foundation through donations, memberships, and community programs that help Mustangs and B***os thrive long after adoption day.

Every dollar helps turn wild potential into lifelong partnerships.

Everyone notices the big moments—the first ride, the clean lead change, the liberty connection, the show ring success.

What they don’t see are the hundreds of ordinary days that made it possible.

The grooming.
The groundwork.
The short sessions.
The quiet wins.

Progress isn’t built in one breakthrough. It’s built in the decision to show up again today.

Keep putting in the work. Your horse is noticing.

Becoming Something New—Together

Today, the transformation is undeniable.

The once-untouchable filly has come leaps and bounds—learning, growing, trusting.

And Shelly?

She’s learning to live again.

“This horse has helped me to go on living life the best I can after such a traumatic loss.”

Their story has touched others too. Shelly has shared their journey with many—so many that people have told her she should write a book.

And in a way, she already is.

Every quiet moment. Every small step. Every day they choose trust over fear—that’s the story.

Now, she’s even teaching her mustang to pony other horses.

A once-frightened filly… becoming a guide.

The Truth About Healing

If you ask Shelly what she’s learned—what she would tell someone standing where she once stood—the answer is simple.

“The healing on both ends of the lead rope is trust.”

Not speed. Not perfection.

Trust.

Her mustang trusts her.

And she trusts her mustang.

“It’s a journey, not a race. It’s a lifetime change.”

After more than 40 years with horses, Shelly says the bond she shares with this mustang is unlike anything she’s ever known.

“She looks to me for guidance… but will also go anywhere for me.”

And maybe that’s what makes mustangs so extraordinary.

They don’t just learn to trust you.

They teach you how to trust again.

Because sometimes, healing doesn’t come the way you planned…
it comes on four hooves—wild, scared, and exactly what your heart needed.
