Lightning deaths continue to rise, with the tragic death of a 73-year-old woman in Autauga County, Alabama, who was apparently struck and killed by lightning last Thursday, while picking blueberries under a tree in her yard.

This is the 23rd lightning death of 2015 — the greatest number of lightning fatalities by July 26 since 2009, when 25 deaths had occurred by that date. The past five years have averaged 16 lightning deaths by July 16.

Remember, if thunderstorms in the forecast, make sure you can quickly get to a safe shelter or reschedule the outdoor activity. If camping, this may mean moving to another campground or site where you can more quickly seek shelter or get to your vehicle.

A man camping with his girlfriend in Medix Run, Pennsylvania, earlier this month was bitten by a rattlesnake and eventually succumbed to the venom, becoming the first person to die from a rattlesnake bite in the state in 25 years.
