It's International Flamingo Day!

🦩 There are six species of flamingo found from the Americas to Africa, in swamps, beaches, and salt pans. Three of the six species called the Nashville Zoo home: Greater, Caribbean, and Chilean!

🦩 Did you know that flamingos turn pink from the food that they eat? There are carotenoids in the shells of shrimp and krill, which causes their feathers to turn pink from the time that they hatch until about 3 years old. It's the same thing that turns a carrot orange, so if you eat too many carrots, you will turn orange!

🦩 None of the species of flamingo are endangered, however they are facing a tough time in the wild due to habitat loss and and degradation. Something you can do to help someone goes is to buy sustainably sourced products that lessen the impact on wild environment.

Appreciate a flamingo today!

It's Love Hornbills Day!

We LOVE Hornbills at Nashville AAZK, and have supported them at many of our events. Why do we love them? Here's a few reasons!

πŸ’ž Love Hornbills Day is celebrated not only to raise awareness for Hornbill species worldwide, but also because they are a symbol of eternal love. Hornbills are monogamous, and mate for life!

πŸ‘οΈ Did you know you can easily tell male and female of some species of Hornbill apart? Look at their eyes! Females have light blue eyes, and the males have red eyes!

πŸ₯ Believe it or not, you can help Hornbills in the wild right here at home! Habitat loss and destruction are a major cause of the decline of Hornbill. You can choose products at home that are made with sustainable palm oil, so that Hornbill habitat isn't harmed!

Love a Hornbill today!

It's International Zebra Day!

We love zebras here at Nashville AAZK! Especially our girls Dotty and Stripette!

πŸ¦“ There are three living species of zebra, all found within Africa. They are in the same family as horses and donkeys, but can be differentiated by their unique black and white stripes.

πŸ¦“ Speaking of stripes, did you know that every zebra has a different pattern? They are just like our fingerprints! There is many hypotheses on the function of the stripes, but some hypotheses are that they help them blend in, help them thermoregulate, and protect them from biting flies!

πŸ¦“ The Grevy's zebra is listed as endangered, the mountain zebra is listed as vulnerable, and the plain zebra is listed as near threatened. Their main threats are poaching and habitat loss, though many zebras are found in protected areas.

Appreciate a zebra today!
