ULMT’s 2026 Summer Leadership Academy Month wraps up this week with our traditional two-week Boys’ Academy. The 13 academically high-achieving young leaders (9th – 12th grade) we’ve had with us are extremely involved in school and community extracurricular activities, college-bound, and driven to succeed. During the Academy, they have been involved in a variety of activities, which have included ACT prep sessions, teambuilding, and visits to several local companies, including Enterprise, BNA (Nashville International Airport), the National Museum for African American Music, the Nashville Predators, and an exclusive tour of the new Titans stadium. We are enormously proud of these student leaders and all of their accomplishments. We thank our very generous Leadership Academy sponsors (Duke Energy/Piedmont Gas, Jackson National, Regions Bank, and Vanderbilt University) for their investment in these future leaders!

Juneteenth (also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day) takes place on June 19 each year to commemorate the end of slavery throughout the United States. Much like the annual celebration of Independence Day on the Fourth of July, Juneteenth is an important part of America's historic fabric and ongoing progress toward liberty and equality for all of its citizens. Join us today as we celebrate this day of freedom!

"Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. It’s a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible—and there is still so much work to do." — Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States

Urban League of Middle Tennessee continued our 2026 Summer Leadership Academy series with the second year of our Girls Leadership Academy last week. The eight young women selected to participate are high academic achievers, highly involved in school and community extracurricular activities, college-bound, and driven to succeed. The week of activities included ACT prep sessions, teambuilding and self-reflection exercises, and visits to several local companies, including Jackson National and News Channel 5, giving the students an up-close and behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of these organizations and possible career options within each company. A huge word of thanks to all of our corporate partners for their investment in these future leaders!

Our Leadership Academy month continues with our traditional Leadership Academy during the last two weeks of June.

Scammers have lost another battle. A new law will officially ban Cryptocurrency ATMs in Tennessee on July 1st. These kiosks scammed Tennesseans out of millions of dollars, but those days are almost over.

AARP Tennessee worked with law enforcement and our state legislators to become the second state in the nation to ban these machines. Read more about the ban below.
