On the eve of Hockey Heals 22, we would like to honor Pvt. Jonathon Busbin.

This year, we are honored to partner with Jon’s Mission for 22 for the 4th annual Hockey Heals 22. Jon’s Mission for 22 is an organization in Pvt. Jonathon Busbin’s honor, run by his parents Laura and Fred Busbin. Their mission is to provide resources to veterans that are suffering from mental health and properly getting veterans the support they need to fight the silent battle.

 “On October 14, 2017, our family was suddenly struck with a hard reality. Our son, Jonathon Busbin, became a member of the estimated 22 Veterans who died due to su***de. He was a soldier in the United States Army and a paratrooper with a deployment under his belt. Upon his return from Afghanistan and his discharge from the Army, we noticed that something was now different in him. What we did not know was that he was not the only son, husband, father, and brother who was suffering from these differences. He was aloof, quiet, reserved, and secretive with his problems. The son who joined the military and came home from war was not quite the same anymore. Things were different with him. We knew that he was fighting internal battles, but we did not know what these were and how often he was fighting them. He would tell us he was fine when we asked him about those battles. He did attempt therapy a few times, but he did not continue to go due to how he was treated there. He also felt like other veterans were more deserving of the treatment offered by the VA. Our son, brother, husband, and father were fighting battles that we were not sure how to help him with. Our mission is to help soldiers, veterans, and their families wage these wars within. We have developed a network of friends, families, veterans, and other organizations to assist us. An early lesson learned for us was that you don’t have to fight this single-handedly. That is why Jon’s Mission for 22 exists. Our goal is to prevent anyone else from feeling our pain.” -Laura Busbin, Jonathon’s Mother.

In just a couple of weeks at Advent Health Center Ice, people will be playing hockey for 22 hours straight. It’s something called “Hockey Heals 22.”
