FACT: The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 is the largest crime bill in the history of the country. Authored by Joe Biden and signed into law by Bill Clinton, the bill authorized a total of $30.2 billion over six years, from 1995-2000. The bulk of these dollars were designated for law enforcement and prison infrastructure, contributing significant financial resources to over-policing, mass incarceration, and criminalization. Incentives provided by the 1994 Crime Bill are the reason our life sentence in TN is 60 years with 51 years before a person is eligible for parole among many other harmful impacts in TN.

Join Tennessee Organizing for Power Statewide (TOPS) to continue our conversation about the 1994 Crime Bill which was started during our political education series. We will unpack the ways in which the bill has failed us and learn more about the recently passed Truth in Sentencing Act which doubles down on those ineffective and harmful policies. We will discuss solutions and build a statewide plan of action to carry forward to the national People’s Movement Assemblies where we will collectively draft a comprehensive alternative bill to replace the 1994 bill.
