In sharing her brain injury journey, Elizabeth Wiley poses a question: If you lived when you should have died, what word would you use to describe yourself?

In August of 2022, a car crash left Elizabeth with, among other injuries, multiple brain bleeds. She was placed in a medically induced coma at the hospital, where the doctors told her family and friends it would be a miracle if she woke up.

Well, Elizabeth did wake up. And for that, the word she would use to describe herself and her journey is miracle.

"My story is one of resilience, faith, and transformation." - Kel M., TBI survivor

"My story is one of surviving the unimaginable and discovering that survival was only the beginning." - Sophie H., ABI survivor

"My daughter’s traumatic brain injury journey can be summed up in one word: perseverance." - Nekita S., caregiver

No matter where you are on your brain injury journey, your story matters, and it deserves to be heard.

Because when more people know about life with brain injury, the easier it will be for them to understand us, our experiences, and our community.

When your loved one sustains a brain injury, your whole world changes in an instant.

That was the case for Sherry Monroe, who suddenly found herself moving into the role of a caregiver after her son, Garrett, sustained a brain injury from being in a motorcycle accident. She was told by Garrett's medical team to prepare for the worst and that the chances of his recovery were slim.

Hearing those words was devastating, but Sherry quickly turned that devastation into action.

She began researching brain injury online to learn everything she could about her son's condition and to prepare for navigating the long road to recovery, whatever that may look like. That's how she found the Brain Injury Association of America's website, where she spent hours reading up on every aspect of brain injury. It was through this research that Sherry learned about different types of doctors who could give Garrett the treatment he needed to get better. She learned about physiatrists, a type of physician previously unknown to her, and found one at a hospital nearby. With this doctor, Garrett was able to get the specific treatment that he needed to heal, which has made all the difference.

We’re thrilled to announce that Pete Weber, The Voice of the Nashville Predators, will serve as emcee for the 2026 Luminary of the Year Celebration benefiting the Brain Injury Association of America – Tennessee Chapter.

Pete’s connection to this mission is meaningful. His own experience with a brain disorder and surgery gave him a deeper appreciation for the importance of brain health, while his decades as a sportscaster have given him a firsthand understanding of the conversation surrounding concussions and brain injuries.

On Thursday, October 8, at Richland Country Club in Nashville, we’ll bring together corporate partners, healthcare professionals, survivors, caregivers, advocates, community leaders, and supporters to raise awareness and critical funding for Tennesseans affected by brain injury.

More than 1.4 million Tennesseans are living with an acquired brain injury—from traumatic injuries such as falls, vehicle crashes, and sports injuries to internal causes including stroke, brain tumors, aneurysms, and other neurological conditions.

This year’s Luminary of the Year, Dr. Mayur Patel of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will be recognized for his leadership in trauma and brain injury care.

We’re grateful to Pete for lending his voice and his heart to this important evening. We hope you’ll join us!

"Everything in my life as a brain injury survivor has grown from one small thing at a time."

The prospect of finding or building community after a brain injury can feel overwhelming. Instead of trying to do everything at once, our Brain Injury Survivor Council recommends starting with just one small step. Whether that's calling your local Brain Injury Association to find a support group, signing up for an art class, or inviting people over for dinner, taking that first step allows community to grow.
