In 1991, Dr. Randy Steger, marketing professor at Lipscomb University, presented a proposal to his students to do a different type of project for the end of the semester. He suggested they seek to meet the mounting needs for medical supplies and equipment in the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. This humanitarian work would utilize the energy and abilities of the students to make a significant difference in the lives of others and the class was ready for the challenge. They determined to secure three to four suitcases filled with medical supplies and equipment to send overseas with missionaries. Lipscomb finally had to ask them to leave campus because the donated supplies were taking over the auditorium! The day they packed up to leave campus they were able to fill two tractor trailers with all of the donated items. Through this urgent need for humanitarian relief the students organized the Healing Hands ministry, which was later incorporated as Healing Hands International in 1993. Since acquiring a 501c3 status in 1996, the Lord has truly blessed this work and HHI has been able to ship to more than 75 countries. The pipeline of resources has been tapped. What was once an idea has become a tool to provide aid to people suffering throughout the world. What happens when 45 staff members from 9 countries come together for a week?

We learn from one another, share what’s working, build deeper relationships, and look toward the future together.

Last month, 15 members of our U.S. office, along with a board member, traveled to Kenya for our second HHI staff gathering, joining colleagues from around the world for a week of training, strategy, visioning, and fellowship.

One of the most meaningful parts of the week was simply learning from each other. Staff shared practical tips, successful approaches, and vocational skills they are teaching in the field, while we also multiplied training manuals and resources so that what one team is learning can be carried to another community.

After a week together, we left Kenya with new ideas, new skills, deeper relationships, and a renewed sense of what is possible when we work together. The future is strong, and we are grateful that you are part of it.

Last week we loaded our biggest MAGI container ever! 7,490 boxes were loaded by our team onto one container heading for Honduras. We are so excited to see the joy that will be brought to thousands of lives.

These gifts are each filled with clothing, hygiene items, educational tools, and “joy items” that provide dignity and build confidence for young students. Thanks to partners like you, we are helping equip children to learn and build brighter futures for themselves.

Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers across the nation who have helped put these gifts together. Every single one of you is making a positive impact across the globe. We could not do this without your generosity, your heart for children, and your partnership in this ministry!

Disaster Response Update: Friday, August 14

Thank you for your prayers. It has been 4 days since the deadly 7.4 earthquake hit Colombia, and the death toll of the earthquake rises above 280 people. Please continue to pray as first responders race to rescue survivors.

HHI is partnering with the Armenia Norte Church of Christ to provide food and basic necessities to their surrounding community as many people can not reenter their condemned homes.

We will continue to assess and partner with local Christians on the ground to provide immediate assistance and eventually help with recovery efforts. In addition to prayer, if you would like to help these efforts, a donation page has been set up, with all donations going directly to relief and recovery efforts in Colombia.
