September was one of our biggest months yet.

Across Tennessee last month, Safer TN advocates welcomed over 900 new coalition members, distributed more than 700 free cable locks, and showed up at 25 community events statewide.

From Back to School Bashes in Memphis and Chattanooga to county fairs and festivals across the state, September was full of real conversations and real momentum.

Our hearts are with the family of the 14-year-old boy who lost his life this week in North Knoxville.

Police say he was shot when a fi***rm being handled by another teenager accidentally discharged. A 15-year-old now faces a juvenile charge of reckless homicide.

Safer TN Advisory Board member Beth Holman shares why secure storage matters now more than ever.

You might not think your kids know where your fi***rm is, but chances are, they do. These tragedies are preventable. Please store your fi***rms locked, unloaded, and out of reach, and talk with your kids about how serious they are, even if there isn’t one in your home.

Request a free cable lock at cablelocktn.org and we’ll send one straight to you.

- At a recent stop in Rhea County, a mother told our coalition coordinator about two little boys who used to live on her old street, boys her own son played with. Not long after her family moved, she saw the news: the boys had been jumping on a bed, unaware of a loaded fi***rm within reach. It went off. One of the twins didn't survive.

We hear stories like this one everywhere we go in Tennessee. Every one of them comes back to the same truth: a secured fi***rm changes the outcome. That's why we keep showing up, keep having these conversations, and keep putting free cable locks into the hands of Tennessee families.

Moving the needle, one conversation at a time➡️

Our Voices for a Safer Tennessee team had an amazing time engaging with local Tennessee communities at Reelfoot Arts and Crafts, National Banana Pudding Festival, and Best of Clarksville!

We also had the opportunity to table at the Middle Tennessee District Fair in Lawrenceburg, where we caught up with Gerrie, last year's fi***rm safe winner. She even reported she uses the safe all the time!

Thank you to all who took the time to speak with our team about fi***rm safety. Keep an eye out for where we will be next!

Real conversations move the needle.

At a recent Mule Day festival, Community Engagement Coordinator Katie Dieckhaus met a dad who told her "We don't need anything. He doesn't know where my guns are." His young son immediately spoke up: "Yes I do, Dad. It's in your drawer."

Katie shared this moment on WPLN's This Is Nashville alongside Board Chair Todd Cruse and Advisory Board member Ketch Secor whose documentary Louder Than Guns is sparking conversations about fi***rms across the county. That dad left the table with two table locks and signed up for our biometric safety raffle.

Kids are curious, and they usually know more than we think. Secure storage saves lives.
