In honor of Teacher Appreciaton week, Resilient Communities helped honored Nita Smith, Crestwell Middle School, outstanding music educator. The Nashville Singers awarded her the Ann Crittenden Arts Advocate of the Year Award. Music is a tool in the resiliency toolbox. Schools with music programs have an estimated 90.2% graduation rate and 93.9% attendance rate compared to schools without music education! Music educators can play a supportive role in helping kids who have experienced trauma. Studies show that art and music-known as expresive arts therapy-can calm the body's stress response. Nita has helped so many students feel respected, find their voices and feel empowered! Thanks Nita and thanks Nashville Singers for allowing us to help honor this outstanding music educator and children's advocate!
