As troops get ready for summer camp and plan water activities, one question comes up a lot: who is allowed to run swim checks?

Swim classification tests are a key part of keeping Scouts safe in the water, whether swimming or boating. All activities must follow core safety guidelines like the Guide to Safe Scouting, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, and Hazardous Weather training found in my.scouting.

That said, the exact rules can vary depending on the type of activity, where it takes place, and local or state regulations.

To clear up the confusion, Scouts BSA worked with the National Aquatics Subcommittee to better define how swim tests should be handled. Learn the details here:

We’re excited to welcome Alex Foster, an Eagle Scout from Troop 137 in our Natchez Trace District, as the new Centennial District Executive for the Middle Tennessee Council of Scouting America!

Alex brings a strong background in marketing and sales from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, along with a lifelong passion for Scouting. His journey began in 2008 as a Bear Scout with Troop 650 in Norcross, Georgia, and led to earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 2016. Through his experiences, Alex has developed a deep commitment to leadership, service, and helping others grow.

He is grateful for the leaders, volunteers, family, and friends who invested in him along the way. Their guidance continues to inspire him as he works to help Scouting empower young people to grow in character, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness. He looks forward to building relationships, supporting our Scouts, and helping them thrive.

We’re thrilled to have Alex on board and look forward to the impact he will make supporting our Scouts and volunteers across the Centennial District and Middle Tennessee!

If you’d like to connect, Alex can be reached at (770) 596-6609 or [email protected]. You can also learn more at https://www.mtcscouting.org/contactus.
