Some cities preserve their history. Others pave over it. What happens when the people remain, but the places that shaped their memories are gone?

Episode 4 of I Remember Nashville explores the complicated legacy of Nashville’s Civil Rights Movement, urban renewal, and gentrification through the voices of those who experienced these changes firsthand.

This episode asks difficult but necessary questions: Can a community truly be renewed if its people are displaced? How do we preserve culture when the buildings, streets, and gathering places are gone?

🎶 Before Nashville was known around the world as the home of country music, DeFord Bailey brought his Smith County musical roots to the city. He would rise to stardom in the early days of the Grand Ole Opry radio show as a harmonica virtuoso, leading many historians to label him the first Black Star in country music.

Episode 2 of I Remember Nashville explores the legacy of DeFord Bailey and the Black roots of country music. In conversation with Bailey’s grandson, we ask difficult questions about race and memory.

🏛️ Richard White, Chief Curator of the Tennessee State Musem
