Warning to Impacted Families: Misinformation Campaign Targeting Grieving Loved Ones on the HALT Fentanyl Act

Facing Fentanyl is issuing a warning to impacted families regarding a misleading campaign being circulated by opposition groups attempting to undermine support for the HALT Fentanyl Act (S.331). We have received reports that individuals opposing this bill are actively preying on grieving families, spreading false narratives about their loved ones’ deaths, and pressuring them into withdrawing support for critical legislation that could prevent future deaths. We want to make clear that while we are not intimidated by the opposition, we are firmly opposed to the dissemination of misinformation and to those who exploit bereaved families for their own agenda.

It has come to our attention that opposition organizers are contacting bereaved families, discrediting the manner of death for their child or loved one. These deceptive tactics are deeply troubling and disrespectful to families who have already suffered unimaginable loss.

The HALT Fentanyl Act is a necessary step in addressing the fentanyl crisis by ensuring that all fentanyl-related substances remain classified as Schedule I drugs, closing loopholes that have allowed traffickers to continue introducing deadly fentanyl analogues into our communities. This bill is about saving lives—not about partisan politics, as these opposition groups falsely claim.

What You Need to Know About the Misinformation Campaign:
• Opposition groups are falsely telling families that the HALT Fentanyl Act would not have prevented their loved one’s death. This is misleading and ignores the reality of how fentanyl is trafficked and sold.

Some families are callously told that their loved one’s death was merely the result of a pre-existing addiction rather than a single unsuspecting use of a fentanyl-made substance. This is an outrageous and cruel misrepresentation of their grief—especially when so many people had no idea, they were ingesting fentanyl at all. Meanwhile, opponents of legislation continue to trivialize these deaths by insisting every fentanyl-related fatality stems exclusively from addiction. The reality is that illicit fentanyl is purposely manufactured to kill or ensnare individuals in addiction without discrimination. It claims the lives of the unsuspecting, the innocent, those who experiment, our youth at record rates, and tragically, many people already suffering from substance use disorder.

• Opponents are using fear tactics, claiming that this bill increases racial disparities, when in reality, it targets the traffickers and cartels responsible for the spread of fentanyl, not individuals struggling with addiction.
• The opposition claims that scheduling fentanyl-related substances prevents research, but this is false—the HALT Fentanyl Act includes provisions to ensure necessary research continues.

We Stand with Families Fighting for Real Change
Facing Fentanyl will not stand by while grieving families are misled and manipulated. The HALT Fentanyl Act is critical to stopping the spread of illicit fentanyl and holding traffickers accountable. Our organization continues to work alongside bipartisan lawmakers, law enforcement, and prevention advocates who understand the urgency of addressing the fentanyl crisis.

We urge families to be cautious of false information being circulated and to trust their own lived experiences. If you have any concerns or are being contacted by opposition groups attempting to mislead you, please know Facing Fentanyl supports all impacted families.

Together, we will continue to fight for policies that protect our loved ones and prevent further loss.

In the context of the fentanyl crisis, Facing Fentanyl recently filed a 301-trade case with the USTR. This case focuses on China's role in producing and exporting fentanyl precursors to the U.S.

The 301-trade case refers to a legal mechanism under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to investigate and take action against foreign countries that violate trade agreements or engage in unfair trade practices that harm U.S. commerce. Section 301 is often used to address issues such as intellectual property theft, unfair subsidies, or barriers to market access.

The aim of the filing is to push the U.S. government to take economic actions, such as imposing tariffs or other trade penalties on China, to disrupt the precursor supply chain. The goal is to reduce the flow of illicit fentanyl into the U.S. without contributing to inflation, as the U.S. economy continues to be strained by the effects of fentanyl-related deaths and the costs of combating the epidemic. The USTR has 45 days to review and validate the case after filing, and potential remedies will be considered based on the findings.

Announcement: NYC Times Square Event Update for National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day August 21

Last year, on August 21, Facing Fentanyl held a press conference in Times Square as part of our day's events to warn the nation about the dangers of fentanyl and the current state of the crisis we face. This press conference is just one part of a busy advocacy day for our Facing Fentanyl team.

It is with great surprise and honor that we have seen families stepping forward to attend this year's press conference and support our efforts. Their willingness to navigate the busiest city in the U.S. and bear the expenses of standing with us is deeply appreciated. The support of impacted families, federal, state, and local law enforcement, and everyone wanting to make a difference has transformed this simple event into something more significant. Participation is not just a show of support but also a powerful testament to the unity of our cause. We want to emphasize the integral role each of you, especially the families, plays.

Driven by our belief in the power of unity, we are expanding this special event in response to the deadliest drug tragedy we have ever witnessed. The outpouring of support from impacted families has encouraged us to broaden our reach. This year, we are taking a significant step forward by including two family events to strengthen our collective resolve further. We are adding a Webex address to the nation and a memorial event on our agenda. This expansion is not just a sign of the momentum but a clear indication of the growth of our cause. It gives us hope and optimism that we are making a difference and not alone in this fight.

We want to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported us and continues to work together for solutions. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and you are genuinely appreciated. Whether you are in NYC or bringing awareness to your communities on August 21, your unwavering support fuels our determination; together, we can make a difference.

What to expect for NYC Special Event Times Square: A day of remembrance, unity, and advocacy for the National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

Facing Fentanyl Press Conference is held in the heart of New York City (Duffy Square) on the busiest street corner in America. This year's peaceful tribute to those lost to fentanyl poisoning starts with an angel memorial on the TSX skyline billboard from 12 pm to 12:20 pm during our press conference. NYPD will es**rt The Trucking Cares Foundation "F.F. Awareness Big Rig" through Times Square past the press conference to NYC DEA. A digital billboard supporting our message and carrying our angels will drive Times Square throughout the day. Our friends from The Hopeaholics will be broadcasting to meet the moment. This standing event is barricaded off and heavily supported by DEA and NYPD presence. Memorial posters and banners that you can carry and support yourself are encouraged.

(**The Facing Fentanyl event is a time to honor those who have been lost and show unity to our cause. We do not tolerate or support profanity in any form or political strife.)*
