Classical Chinese poetry reflects not only a crucial part of Chinese culture, but also how Chinese thought has evolved over millenia. The Shijing (诗经) is the earliest form of Chinese poetry, a collection of 305 poems from the 11th to the 7th centuries BCE. It is one of Chinese literature’s Five Classics. Since then, poetry has flourished. The Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 CE) is often regarded as the golden age of Chinese poetry as political stability and economic prosperity allowed for cultural development. Li Bai (李白) is perhaps the most famous Tang Dynasty poet. As summer is coming to an end, here is a poem by Li Bai titled “夏日山中,” or “A Summer Day in the Mountains.”

懒摇白羽扇,裸袒青林中。
脱巾挂石壁,露顶洒松风。

Idly waving my white-feathered fan,
Bare-chested in the green grove.
Draping my headscarf on a rocky bluff,
Pine breeze ruffles my hair.*
