Happy Nameday to all those who celebrate on this feastday of St. Zacharias! Χρόνια Πολλά!

According to the opinion of many Fathers of the Church, based on an ancient tradition, this is the Zacharias whom, as our Lord said, the Jews slew between the temple and the altar (Matt. 23:35), first, because even after the Virgin Mary gave birth, he continued to refer to her as virgin and number her among the virgins; second, because Zacharias' son John was not found during the slaughter of the Innocents, since the elderly Elizabeth had taken him and carefully hid him while he was yet an infant, in an unnamed place somewhere in the desert, where, according to the Evangelist, "the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel" (Luke 1:80). When the child was not found, his father was slain by Herod's command.

Our St. Philip community will be hosting a meal packing event in which we will package 10,000 meals on Sunday October 18th immediately following Divine Liturgy in the fellowship hall for the organization Rise Against Hunger. These packaged meals will then be distributed to people around the world who are facing severe hunger, and food insecurity.

A heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who has generously contributed to our fundraising efforts so far! We’re excited to share that we have exceeded our goal and raised $4,850 for our Rise Against Hunger fundraiser!

Any additional donations will go directly to Rise Against Hunger. Besides providing meals, the organization helps communities fight hunger through education, sustainable farming, and economic opportunities to help permanently end global food insecurity.

"Dear God, here is (name), ready for her first day at school. She has been counting the days. She is so thrilled. Be with her today when she goes into unfamiliar rooms, when she sees new faces (make them kind faces!), when she stands in the lunch line, and when she is on the playground. Keep her close to You as she learns and grows and makes friends. Protect her from harm. Watch over her on the way to and from school. Orthros, 8:30am; Divine Liturgy, 9:30am.

Today is the 12th Sunday of Matthew, and the Gospel where the Lord talks about how we can attain eternal life. “If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” The first part of the Ten Commandments refers to the love of God and the second part relates to the matters of love of neighbor. Jesus shows that the commandments are not a matter of purely external actions, but a matter of the heart.
Jesus says, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” The image of a camel going through the eye of a needle is a simple analogy of impossibility. Apart from the love and grace of God, we cannot find eternal life. Whether rich or poor, we close ourselves to Him when we love anything more than the God who loves us. It is a question of what is our greatest treasure: The Lord or possessions of this life?

Services for the Dormition of the Theotokos, 9am

Χρόνια Πολλά and Happy Nameday to all who celebrate today!

Following her repose, the body of the Theotokos was taken in procession and laid in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane. When the Apostle Thomas arrived three days after her repose and desired to see her body, the tomb was found to be empty. The bodily assumption of the Theotokos was confirmed by the message of an angel and by her appearance to the Apostles.
