In this weather, we all could use a helping hand. Pictured here are some of Troop 1 Narragansett’s scouts and alumni doing good turns helping neighbors cleanup in the Blizzard aftermath. It is a great day to get out there and help your neighbor. Good job, Scouts!

Unlike most American kids, 12-year-old Robert Wada participated in Boy Scouts behind a barbed wire fence at the Poston concentration camps in Arizona during World War II.

Wada and his family were among the more than 120,000 Japanese American people, most of them United States citizens, uprooted from West Coast regions during World War II after President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942.

Under the constant gaze of armed guards, inmates started schools, newspapers, sports teams, theater groups, and other civic organizations.

When Wada and other boys at Poston decided to establish a Boy Scout troop, they designated themselves as “Troop 100” to honor the 100th Infantry Battalion, a U.S. combat unit comprised of mostly second-generation Japanese Americans. In this Boy Scout uniform in our National Museum of American History, Wada went camping, earned merit badges, and participated in parades honoring American soldiers departing for World War II.

As an adult, Wada enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and served as a tank crewman during the Korean War. He proudly participated in veterans' organizations until his death in 2023.

We asked for your help and you sure responded! Thank you, Narragansett! For 2025’s Scouting for Food campaign, Troop 1 Narragansett together with Cub Scout Pack 29 Narragansett, alumni, family, and friends collected a grand total of 6,050 lbs of food. We are absolutely stunned by the generosity of our community. This is the most generous year many of us in this Troop have seen.

Honestly, our Troop briefly considered whether we could contribute this year, because we have just seven active scouts at the moment. But, we know that our neighbors are hungry and shelves are bare. If we could only fill a few boxes we thought it would be worth it. A scout is helpful, after all.

In the end, we had 35 volunteers who put in 210+ hours of work this weekend and last to hang door tags, collect, sort, box and deliver donations that came in from all over our community. These donations will be put to good use by St. Peter’s Food Pantry, the Galilee Mission, and the Welcome House.

If any young person in your life is interested in being part of good work worth doing, and having some adventures along the way, our Troop meets at the Community Center on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm. We would love for them to join us!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hello Narragansett! Every year, Troop 1 participates in Scouting for Food. Last year we collected over 3,500 lbs of food for our local food pantries!

-We distributed this year’s door tags last weekend, so please remember to put out any donations before 9AM tomorrow if you got a door tag.

-If we didn’t get to you with a door tag at your home, please feel free to drop off any donations between 9am and 12pm at the fire station in the north end of town.

-Lastly, we will also be glad to accept your leftover Halloween candy which will be sent to US Military deployed internationally.

We know times are tight, and it’s clear we have many friends and neighbors in need as we come into November. We appreciate any support you can give and hope to see you (and/or your donations) tomorrow!

🚪🥫 Scouting for Food Starts This Saturday! 🥫🚪
Our annual Scouting for Food drive kicks off this weekend with door tag distribution! These tags remind neighbors to leave non-perishable food donations on their doorsteps for pickup next Saturday.
🧭 Scouts — bring your energy and service spirit! Let’s work together to support families in need across our communities.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents — a quick reminder:
Please keep track of the homes where your Scout places door tags. Many residents look forward to participating and are disappointed if their home is missed on collection day.
⚠️ Safety First!
• Distribute door tags during daylight hours (after 9:00 AM).
• No food collection or tag distribution after dark.
• No riding on tailgates or in the back of vehicles. All Scouts must wear seatbelts when being transported.
• Drivers: use extreme caution and avoid busy streets.
• Adult leaders must be present during both tag distribution and food pickup.
• Always use the buddy system.
• Scouts should never enter a home for any reason.
