America at 250: Jonas Phillips and the Promise of Equal Citizenship

As the United States was being formed, Jonas Phillips, a Jewish immigrant, patriot, and community leader, raised an important question: Would the new nation truly provide equal rights to people of all faiths?

In 1787, Phillips wrote to George Washington and the Constitutional Convention expressing concern over religious tests for public office, advocating for a country where citizens would be judged not by their faith, but by their character and commitment to the nation.

His voice helped advance a principle that remains central to the American experiment: that religious freedom and equal opportunity belong to all Americans.

As we mark America's 250th anniversary, we remember Jonas Phillips and the many individuals who helped shape a nation committed to liberty, inclusion, and the free exercise of religion.
