Robert Crompton

Robert Crompton describes himself first and foremost as a storyteller.

His love of books began during childhood, when he discovered writers such as Mary Webb, Winifred Holtby and Robert Neill. His father was an avid reader, while an inspiring primary-school teacher encouraged his pupils to write creatively every week.

His path to becoming a published novelist, however, was far from straightforward.

He worked in science, local government and later became a Methodist minister. He studied philosophy and linguistics at Lancaster University and biblical studies at Cambridge.

His academic work eventually resulted in Counting the Days to Armageddon, a study of the religion in which he had grown up.

That academic journey eventually opened another door: fiction.

Robert's writing frequently draws upon landscapes, memory, history, religion and the lives of people attempting to break free from restrictive circumstances.

His books include Bunderlin, Leaving Gilead, Solomon's Magpie, Misfits in Gilead, Pathways to Freedom and The Dark Side of Gilead. His author site also shows that he continues to develop new work, including Dislocation, which was highlighted in June 2026.

ROBERT IN HIS OWN WORDS

One of the most revealing parts of Robert's story is how naturally writing became part of his identity.

He says:

“I guess from that early start I took it for granted that whatever else I might be, I would always be a writer.”

That childhood certainty eventually became a long and unconventional journey through science, academia, ministry and finally fiction.

IN CONVERSATION WITH ROBERT CROMPTON
1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to become a writer?

I was an avid reader from an early age, inspired by my father who always had a book in his hands. I was fortunate to have an especially good teacher in primary school who loved reading and who encouraged us all to write something creative every week. I guess from that early start I took it for granted that whatever else I might be, I would always be a writer.

2. What inspired you to write The Dark Side of Gilead?

The Dark Side of Gilead was inspired by my own and other people's experience of authoritarian religion and trying to break free from it.

In particular, an episode which set my imagination going was something I scribbled down while visiting my son in Spain: a young girl who has no memory of where she comes from except that she was a prisoner of sorts in someone's junk room.

She eventually grew in my imagination to become Lisa, a major character in the story.

3. What can readers expect from the story, and what makes it different from other books in its genre?

I would hope that readers might take encouragement to live their lives in freedom without being defined by whatever might have previously suppressed them.

I think Dark Side differs from some, though not all, ex-cult-themed stories in not focusing so much upon the cult from which it is necessary to escape, but rather upon the life ahead which must be grasped.

4. Was there a particular character or aspect of the story that you especially enjoyed developing?

I really enjoyed developing the character of Vic Scanlon who, despite being bullied into becoming a low-achiever, broke free and was enabled to realise his true potential.

5. What themes or messages do you hope readers take away from the book?

Don't focus upon the darkness behind, but rather upon the light ahead.

6. Was there a particular moment, idea, or experience that influenced the direction of the story?

There was a particular moment of insight when trying to develop Vic's progress from his reading difficulties.

This is when, in the story, Lorrie Webster, who is helping him, recognises that his problem is not really a matter of literacy, but rather it's a kind of stage fright brought on by constant bullying within the cult.

His way ahead then becomes much clearer.

7. What was the most challenging part of writing The Dark Side of Gilead, and how did you overcome it?

By far the most difficult part of writing Dark Side was developing the characters of Nigel Clifford and Len Robinson.

Both are really obnoxious people but I had to enter the role in each case in order to portray the character.

It leaves one feeling soiled and guilty, but that was lifted from me by spending lots of quality leisure time with my lovely wife and walking in the woodlands with our super dog.

8. What do you hope readers feel or think about after finishing the book?

“If Vic and Amy and Lisa can do it, so can I.”

9. Who would you say would especially enjoy reading The Dark Side of Gilead?

I hope that anyone trying to live anew after major upheaval would find encouragement from The Dark Side of Gilead.

10. Are you currently working on another book or any upcoming projects you would like our readers to know about?

I am playing around in my imagining with a couple of ideas for my next novel, which may turn out to be one more of my Gilead novels.

11. If you could give readers one reason to pick up The Dark Side of Gilead, what would it be?

Go on, give it a go. I think you'll enjoy it!

There is one message that seems to run through Robert's answers again and again:

Freedom is not only about leaving the darkness. It is about learning to live in the light.

That is why Vic's journey matters.

He begins as someone whose potential has been suppressed by bullying and eventually discovers that what appeared to be an inability to succeed was something much deeper.

His story becomes one of recognition, recovery and possibility.

And that makes his journey larger than the fictional world of Gilead.

Two characters Robert found particularly challenging to write because of their unpleasant personalities. Portraying them required him to enter their perspectives, something he found emotionally difficult.

A significant figure in Vic's development who recognises that his difficulties are not simply about literacy. Her insight helps reveal the psychological impact of the bullying he experienced.

Hold on to His Word, guard your heart against discouragement, and continue to trust Him. The God who authors life has not forgotten your name. Your testimony is still being written, and His timing is always worth trusting.

On a personal note, after years of waiting and painful losses, God did it for me, and so I know He is well able to do it for you. Keep believing, keep trusting, and let hope remain alive in your heart.

Was there a Bible verse that helped shape the message of your book?

One Scripture that continually resonates with me is Jeremiah 1:5. That verse reminds us that God's relationship with every child begins before birth. It reinforces the truth that children are not accidents; they are heaven's intentional design.

What has been the most meaningful response you have received from readers?

One of the most meaningful responses has been hearing readers say that the book changed how they view children—not simply as responsibilities, but as destinies entrusted to their care. Others have shared that it renewed their hope while waiting on God for a child.

Knowing that the message has encouraged faith, restored hope, and inspired intentional parenting has been deeply rewarding.

What do you hope God accomplishes through this book and your writing ministry?

My greatest prayer is that God uses this book to transform hearts, strengthen families, and raise a generation of parents and caregivers who guard, guide, and steward children according to His purpose.

Beyond this one book, I pray my writing ministry continually points people to Christ, inspires unwavering faith, and leaves a legacy that impacts generations for His glory.
