MAINE BREAST CANCER COMMUNITY — THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to life after breast cancer, and reconstruction isn’t the only option after mastectomy. Every patient deserves to know their options, have their wishes respected, and make informed decisions about their own body.

This Saturday, October 24, Flat Features: A Multimedia Aesthetic Flat Closure Event is coming to Steel House in Rockland, Maine!

The event brings together art, fashion, film, and honest conversation about aesthetic flat closure, body autonomy, and the experiences of those who choose to go flat.

The afternoon includes:

• 4:30–6:00 PM: Flatwear Clothing pop-up shop, featuring clothing designed for flat bodies.

• Nevertheless, I Am Still: An exhibit sharing the stories of individuals who chose to go flat after mastectomy.

• 6:00 PM: Screening of Re/Construction, a documentary exploring medical prejudice and bodily autonomy.

• 6:30 PM: Panel discussion with Kim Bowles of Not Putting on a Shirt, addressing aesthetic flat closure, reconstruction choices, and patient experiences.

Whether you’re facing a mastectomy, navigating survivorship, advocating for patient choice, or simply interested in learning more, this is an opportunity for meaningful conversation and connection right here in Maine.

Because informed consent matters. Patient choice matters. And going flat deserves the same respect as every other reconstruction decision.

🎬✨ Movie Magic created real impact.

Thanks to the incredible support behind our 2026 Runway for Hope, the New England Breast Cancer Alliance is donating $115,000 in net proceeds to breast cancer research through the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) — bringing our total research donations to $250,000. 💗

This year’s $115,000 will support two areas of breast cancer research: $70,000 toward treatment research and $45,000 toward survivorship research.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re reminded of just how much awareness matters. But we also believe deeply in turning that awareness into action — into research, resources, support, and meaningful change for people affected by breast cancer.

This $115,000 is possible because of an entire community that showed up for Runway for Hope: our sponsors and donors who invested in our mission; our Models and Hope Ambassadors who shared their stories and raised funds; our volunteers who gave countless hours; and every person who attended, donated, shared, cheered, and supported this event.

A quarter of a million dollars to breast cancer research. And we’re still growing. 💕

We’re incredibly proud of what this community has built — and even more excited about what we can do next.

We have been working hard to launch a new program and you breasties are the first to know! 🫶🏻

We understand that everyday costs surrounding care can quickly add up, creating unintended stress during treatment, recovery, and beyond. Our new Helping Hands program can help ease the burden with the goal of spreading a little joy while lending support to survivors and their families. Click to learn more.

Our purpose is simple: to lighten the load, even in a small way, so survivors can focus more of their energy on themselves, their families, and moving forward.

This is a great opportunity to not only celebrate our loved ones who have battled breast cancer, but to join in community with other people who have been impacted by cancer.

💕 ALL breast cancer survivors are welcome to apply. At NEBCA, we consider anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer a survivor — whether you were diagnosed recently or decades ago, and regardless of where you are in your treatment or survivorship journey.

There are two ways for survivors to participate:

👠 Models will wear looks inspired by our theme and take to the runway individually to share their stories, helping to raise funds for breast cancer research and support in the process.

💐 Hope Ambassadors have a similar role, but will walk the runway together as a group.

This year’s theme is Flora & Fauna, celebrating the plant and animal life of the natural world. 🌺🌿🦋🐚 We can’t wait to see our survivors and designers bring the beauty, strength, color and diversity of nature to the runway!
