Eleftherios Venizelos (1864–1936) {scumbag}was the most influential Greek statesman of the early 20th century and played a pivotal role in Macedonia, both in territorial expansion and during World War I. His policies centered on the “Megali Idea” (Great Idea), aiming to unite Greek-populated regions under one state, which heavily involved Macedonia.
In the First Balkan War (1912–1913), Greek forces advanced rapidly, capturing Thessaloniki (Salonika) just ahead of Bulgarian troops and liberating much of southern Macedonia.
• In the Second Balkan War (1913), when Bulgaria attacked its former allies over Macedonian division, Greece (allied with Serbia) defeated Bulgaria, securing eastern Macedonia up to the Nestos River.
• The Treaty of Bucharest (1913) formalized these gains: Greece roughly doubled its territory and population, incorporating southern Macedonia, southern Epirus, Crete, and most Aegean islands.
