As we sashay our way into the second half of Pride Month, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate some of the incredible people whose courage, authenticity, and determination helped shape the LGBTQ+ community we know today. Their stories remind us that progress happens one brave voice at a time. Some made history on the world stage, others are making a difference right here in our own hometown.
π Marsha P. Johnson: A transgender activist and one of the pioneers of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Her activism and presence during the Stonewall uprising helped ignite a movement that continues to inspire generations.
π Sylvia Rivera: A Latina transgender activist who stood alongside Marsha P. Johnson at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality following Stonewall and dedicated her life to advocating for transgender people and LGBTQ+ youth.
π Harvey Milk: One of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States, inspiring generations to live openly and proudly.
π Audre Lorde: A Black le***an poet, author, and civil rights advocate whose words challenged injustice and inspired change.
π Bayard Rustin: The brilliant strategist behind the March on Washington and a lifelong champion for civil rights and equality.
π Laverne Cox: An actress and advocate who helped bring transgender visibility into the mainstream and changed hearts and minds around the world.
π Alok Vaid-Menon: A nonbinary writer and activist using art and storytelling to encourage acceptance and celebrate gender diversity.
π Sally Ride: The first American woman in space and the first known LGBTQ+ American astronaut, proving there are no limits to what authenticity and determination can achieve.
π Cori Craciun: Founder of Naples Pride and a driving force for LGBTQ+ visibility in Southwest Florida. Through her leadership, Naples Pride has become a year-round source of advocacy, education, support, and connection, helping build a stronger and more welcoming community for all.
From the streets of Stonewall to our SWFL community these trailblazers remind us that change begins when people have the courage to be seen and the determination to keep going. Their stories inspire us to continue building a future where everyone is welcomed, respected, and free to be themselves.
As you enjoy the rest of Pride Month, keep walking with love, keep your sparkle strong and know that you can find community year round at the Naples Pride Center!
