HAVING FUN WHILE SERVING OTHERS

Rotary club members are men and women of all ages and professional backgrounds who use their talents, skills, and energy to improve the lives of people in communities at home and around the world. There’s something that all Rotary club members have in common: We take action. As community volunteers, we reach out to neighbors in need. We build, support, and organize. We work locally and globally.

For National Transportation Day we are highlighting a mode of transportation that has been used both by our earliest inhabitants as a main way of travel and today, simply for recreation.

Canoes were used by the Calusa and later Seminole to traverse the Gulf, canals and the river of grass- the Everglades. Dugout canoes were made from entire cypress trees, hollowed out by hand. These canoes were used for hundreds of years. You can see a recreation of a dugout canoe at the Naples Depot Museum, shown in the photo.

At the Naples Depot Museum, be sure to check out our newest exhibit, Battle of the Paddle: The Great Dock Canoe Race, celebrating a fun and iconic piece of Naples history. Naples Depot Museum is open Tuesdays - Saturday from 9am - 4pm. Admission is Free!

And if you’d like to experience the tradition firsthand, go down to Baker Park this Saturday, May 16, for the live event! For schedule visit, https://www.naplescanoeraces.com/
