Thank you Tammy Gray for these words that should be read to all of our members!
To those who may have forgotten what the American Legion Family is all about, let us remind you.
We are not here for titles, recognition, or personal agendas. We are here to serve those who served our country.
Every day, members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of The American Legion volunteer their time, their energy, and their resources to support Veterans and their families. We visit Veterans who are alone. We provide assistance when a Veteran is struggling. We support homeless Veterans, help families in need, honor those who have passed, and stand beside Veterans when they need someone in their corner.
And perhaps most importantly, we are there for Veterans in crisis.
When a Veteran is struggling with homelessness, financial hardship, addiction, mental health challenges, or thoughts of su***de, that is not the time to ask what their title is, what unit they belong to, or whether they have done everything right.
That is the time to reach out a hand.
The American Legion Family is supposed to be a place where Veterans and their families know they are seen, heard, valued, and not alone.
We can disagree. We can have different opinions. We can hold one another accountable. We can address misconduct when it occurs. But through all of that, we should never lose sight of why we are here in the first place.
We owe it to our Veterans to put service before self.
So before we criticize, before we judge, before we allow personal disagreements to divide us, let's remember the Veteran sitting at home who may need a phone call. The family that needs help. The Veteran who doesn't know where to turn. The person who may be quietly struggling and hoping someone notices.
That is where the American Legion Family matters.
We wear the emblem because of the people who wore the uniform.
Never forget the mission.
Never forget the Veteran.
And never forget that sometimes, simply being there can save a life.
