It was a busy week for TPEPA! 100 supporters gathered at Camp Skylemar on Saturday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the TPEPA and on Thursday 4 divers from LEA came to survey the pond for invasive plants - we’re happy to report that no suspicious plants were found. The TPEPA looks forward to working with all our supporters to continue protecting this special place. Thank you all!

Looking for something fun for your child this summer? LEA’s Eco-Explorers day camp starts in one week. We have plenty of space and would love to see some new faces. Kids ages 7-11 will explore the Holt Pond Preserve with experienced outdoor educators. The camp runs 9am-3pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Today wardens from Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife along with TPEPA volunteers placed three Headway Speed Only markers on the north end of Trickey Pond. Headway speed is the slowest speed at which it is still possible to maintain steering control of the watercraft. It’s also the speed that protects Maine wildlife, keeps swimmers safe, and prevents erosion.

A TPEPA member shared this photo this weekend. Trickey Pond has two baby loon chicks! That’s two years in a row with two chicks. While their nest was on the northeasterly island, now that they are swimming they are most frequently spotted on the south end of the lake. Be aware while boating, they are difficult to spot.

The LEA is hard at work controlling milfoil in area water ways. Before you bring your boat to Trickey Pond, please make sure you "Clean, Drain, and Dry" your boat and gear before launching. The public launch has a boat wash station to clean your boat. If there is a courtesy boat inspector on duty they can assist with inspecting your boat. But ultimately, it is the boater's responsibility to ensure they are not transporting invasive plants. Help protect Trickey Pond.

Our 2025 water monitoring summary is now available! LEA visits 22 lakes biweekly from May through September, and an additional 19 sites in late August.

We focus much of our work on water clarity, chlorophyll-a concentrations, and total phosphorus. When considered together, these three indicators help us describe water quality conditions in a pond or lake. We also collect temperature and oxygen profiles, take samples for nutrient and algae analysis, estimate Gloeotrichia density (a type of cyanobacteria), and record weather conditions. Water samples are analyzed at our Maine Lake Science Center in Bridgton.

For most lakes, clarity, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll measurements from 2025 were within the same water quality classification range as the long-term averages. Our data is shared with Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection and is made available to the public on our website at www.mainelakes.org/testing-reports
