⚖️ JUSTICE FOR DEXTER.

On Friday, August 14, AJA was back at the Collier County Courthouse following another animal cruelty case and making sure our community stays informed.

Dexter was an 8-year-old Beagle Terrier mix who was tragically found dead inside his crate without access to water. His death was attributed to heat exhaustion and/or dehydration.

His owner, Kedine Trudeau, has been convicted of animal cruelty. As part of a plea agreement, she was sentenced to:

• 90 days in the Collier County Jail
• 24 months of state probation
• No ownership or custody of animals
• Registration with the animal abuse registry
• Court and investigative costs

Dexter deserved better.

AJA will continue showing up, following these cases through the court system, and keeping our community informed about the consequences of animal cruelty.

We will keep watching. We will keep advocating. And we will keep being a voice for animals like Dexter who no longer have one. 🐾

Case Update: Olga Murphy

Today, there was a resolution in the animal cruelty case involving Olga Murphy.

Murphy was convicted in connection with a case involving more than 50 Maine C**n cats that were being kept in captivity inside her home, as well as an additional 15–20 deceased cats found in her freezer.

As part of today’s plea agreement, she was sentenced to:

🐾 15 days in the Collier County Jail
🐾 24 months of probation
🐾 120 hours of community service
🐾 $1,290 in court costs
🐾 $17,983 in restitution to Domestic Animal Services

In addition, she:

• Is prohibited from owning or keeping animals in her home.
• Is enjoined from being a pet dealer.
• Must register on the Collier County Animal Abuse Registry.

We will continue following this case and monitoring compliance with the court’s orders, including registration on the Animal Abuse Registry and payment of the ordered restitution.

Our mission is to keep our community informed about local animal cruelty cases while advocating for accountability and stronger protections for animals.

Two years ago, Collier County and Lee County came together to create an Animal Abuse Registry as a tool to help protect animals and hold abusers accountable.

The registry wasn’t intended to include only people convicted of animal cruelty. It was also meant to include individuals who have been declared unfit to own or care for animals by a civil court judge.

So why, after two years, are there only 19 offenders on the registry when we know many more qualifying cases exist?

One possible reason is that the registry appears to rely on self-reporting.

If that’s the case, it isn’t serving the purpose it was created for.

At Animal Justice Advocates, we’re not here just to point out the problem… we want to help solve it.

We are ready and willing to volunteer our time to help improve this registry and make it the effective tool our community deserves. Whether that’s researching qualifying cases, assisting with the process, or helping identify a better system, we’re ready to work together.

50 dogs were removed. Charges were filed. A sentence was handed down.

But accountability doesn’t end there.

Outstanding fines remain. Required registry compliance remains unresolved.

Animal Justice Advocacy was created because animal cruelty cases deserve continued attention, not just on the day of the arrest, but until every court-ordered requirement is fulfilled.

Justice requires accountability. And we’re watching.

Our Animal Justice Advocates were back at the Collier County Courthouse on May 21st to monitor two animal cruelty cases and ensure the community stays informed about what is happening locally.

🐾 Case 1: Olga Murphy
This case involves approximately 50 Maine C**n cats found living in reportedly unsanitary conditions, along with approximately 20 deceased cats reportedly discovered in a freezer at the residence. The case has been scheduled for a plea hearing on July 9.

🐾 Case 2: Kedine AnnMarie Trudeau
This case involves a dog that was found deceased in an outdoor crate and reportedly did not have access to water. The case has been set for trial in September.

We will continue following these cases and will provide updates once court proceedings have concluded.

Animal cruelty thrives in silence. By showing up, staying informed, and sharing factual information, we can help create a community where neglect and abuse are taken seriously.

Animal Justice Advocates stand up for animals who can’t speak for themselves. 

We are fighting cruelty, protecting the innocent, and making sure those who harm animals are held accountable. We educate our communities and push for stronger enforcement with stronger penalties to break the cycle of animal cruelty.

Today, members of Animal Justice Advocates were present at the courthouse for the sentencing in the Olga Kapishon case.

Olga Kapishon was convicted after pleading no contest to charges of:
• Breeding without a license
• Practicing veterinary medicine without a license

She was sentenced to 120 days in jail, including credit for the 119 days already served, followed by 24 months of state probation.

Restitution ordered includes:
• $29,720 to Collier County
• $16,305 to Patty Baker Humane Society Naples

These funds are intended to help cover the extensive costs associated with caring for the 50+ animals removed from her care.

Additional court-ordered costs include:
• $1,078 for investigation costs
• $450 in court costs

As part of the sentence, she must also:
• Register in the animal abuse registry
• Not own animals in this part of Florida
• Cover investigation and court-related costs

This case is a reminder that animal cruelty, illegal breeding, and unlicensed veterinary practices have serious consequences. Thank you to everyone involved in advocating for these animals and working toward accountability.
