Carolyn Parr Nature Center

Carolyn Parr Nature Center The Carolyn Parr Nature Center is at the base of Westwood Hills in Napa, CA. Its purpose is the education of local community members and school children.

The Napa Valley Naturalists organization was founded in 1978 by a group of local citizens with diverse but intense concerns about the environment. At the time of her death in 1980, one of those members, Carolyn Parr, left her modest estate for the purpose of establishing a nature center. Carolyn Parr's primary personal interest was in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, and her vision had been to

create something similar to Walnut Creek's Lindsay Museum, where displays, programs for children, and wildlife rescue all take place at the same location. Using her bequest, the executors of Carolyn Parr's purchased a doublewide mobile home and arranged for it to be sited on the back parking lot of Vintage High School. Unfortunately, this space and site were inadequate for the combination conceived. There were problems with lack of security and vandalism, and there was not enough space to keep the rehabbing wildlife separate from the public, which is an absolute necessity in terms of the law as well as the success of the venture. For this reason, the Wildlife Rescue component immediately split off from the Nature Center, and was run by NVN member Connie Bogosian from her personal dwellings for the next ten years. In 1990, when Connie retired, the NVN board assisted with the establishment of a separate organization, Wildlife Rescue of Napa County, which is the current provider of these services in Napa County. Meanwhile, arrangements were made in 1984 to move the museum to the foot of Westwood Hills Park, where it has more public exposure than at its former site. So, Carolyn Parr Nature Center currently sits on city property and is easily accessible to the public using the adjacent parking lot. The Carolyn Parr Nature Center is an all-volunteer organization. DOCENTS staff the center on weekend afternoons and host weekday tour groups. ADMINISTRATIVE VOLUNTEERS support general operations. They construct displays, assist with publicity and fundraising, and perform maintenance tasks. The only requirements for volunteers are interest and enthusiasm. All necessary training is easily provided. The Carolyn Parr Nature Center and Museum is located on 3107 Browns Valley Road in Napa, CA (94558).

Join us here at the Nature Center Saturday, March 21st 2026 from 10:30am - 12pm to see some beautiful feathered friends: Pigeons! Everyone knows these birds, but too few people really get to step inside their world. Commonly misunderstood as "sky rats" or pests in general, these birds have been companions with humans for centuries until very recently. As the first domesticated bird, many pigeons are still reliant on humans and make incredible sweet pets! Palomacy Pigeon and Dove Rescue works with pigeons all over the Bay Area. Racing pigeons found injured or lost, abandoned fancy pigeons, or seized king pigeons, there are many reasons these gentle birds are in need of rescuing. Come learn all about and get to meet some of Palomacy's pride and joy!

We still have spots available for our upcoming reptile event with Joe Lam this Saturday, January 24th 10:30am - 12pm, featuring some of his favorite rare and strange cold blooded friends! Most of these animals are unreleasable or were pets simply found in the wild, so now they live pampered and weird with Joe at his rescue. Learn the difference between albino and leucistic, as well as meeting some peculiar creatures you might not know existed! We always love having Joe at the Center to teach us about these amazing and unique animals.

Join us at the Center Saturday, January 24th 10:30am - 12pm with our favorite reptile rehabilitator Joe Lam as he brings some of his most strange and interesting reptile friends! Some of these animals are unreleaseable due to their peculiarities, which is why they're now cared for in captivity. Between unique colors, strange bodies, or rare species, this batch of cold blooded creatures are perfectly healthy and happy- just different! We always enjoy educating about and having these beautiful animals showcased in our space, and we hope to see you here!

We had a lovely time at our Holiday Open House yesterday. A lot of fragrant wreaths were made. Kids got prizes for correctly counting how many animals had Santa hats and for tossing pine cones through a wreath. Of course, many cookies were devoured and washed down with apple cider. The last two photos are of Jack, who first came to our Holiday Open House in 2017 and has attended every year since. My, how kids grow! Thank you all for coming and making the day a success.
