This Saturday, April 25 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm we’ll host a table at the Indian Education and Cultural Event to celebrate the dance, food ways, and indigenous knowledge that will be shared. We have culturally meaningful seeds to share, as well as their stories. Please join us and celebrate Indian culture!

Our first Skill & Knowledge Share happens Tuesday, April 21st at 4:00 pm at the St. Helena Public Library!

Did you know that planting, saving, and sharing seeds grown in your region increases greater genetic diversity, fosters adaptation to your local climate, and contributes to our seed library inventory?

Learn how to use the seed library and how to save seeds from one bean variety— the Kosovo bean! Debbie Stevens has stewarded this seed variety in Napa for over 10 years, and we’re going to share their story and growing requirements to extend its range in St. Helena, where it can grow equally well.

¿Qué debo saber sobre este intercambio de semillas?

La Biblioteca de Semillas del Condado de Napa organiza su intercambio anual de semillas para ayudar a los habitantes del condado a dar inicio a su temporada de cultivo. Pedimos a los asistentes que TRAIGAN semillas para compartir e intercambiar con los demás. Si no tienes semillas que compartir, te pedimos una donación para ayudar a cubrir los gastos de la organización del evento.

Los intercambios de semillas son lugares estupendos para conocer gente de manera informal e intercambiar semillas, historias, consejos y preguntas. Comparte lo que sabes (o quieres saber) sobre semillas, diviértete y conoce a gente.

¿Qué debo llevar a este intercambio de semillas?

Trae semillas completamente secas, procesadas y limpias en frascos, sobres, bolsas de plástico o de papel, u otros tipos de recipientes resistentes y fáciles de cerrar. ¡ETIQUETA TUS SEMILLAS!

What Do I Need to Know About This Seed Swap?

The Napa County Seed Library hosts its an annual seed swap to help people of Napa County kick off their growing season. We ask that people BRING seeds to share and exchange with others. If you do not have seeds to share, then we ask for a donation to help cover the cost of putting on the event.

Seed swaps are great places to meet people informally and exchange seeds, stories, tips, and questions. Share what you know (or want to know) about seeds, have fun, meet people.

What Do I Bring to This Seed Swap?

Bring fully dried, processed, clean seeds in jars, envelopes, plastic or paper bags, or other types of easily closed and sturdy containers. LABEL YOUR SEEDS!

* If you do not have seeds to share or exchange, bring a five dollars ($5) to donate at the event to keep our mission going strong. *

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to be in person to teach the class “How to Use the Seed Libraries,” and “How to Prepare for the Seed Swap” at the Napa County Library today.

So I figured I can record a short video to help you learn some of the basics! Below are links to two videos that Lavender and I recorded previously to help people with the same topics, which will give you more details.

Seeds to sow in April | Semillas para sembrar en abril

A Spring Break (of Rain)! 🌷🐇

Rainy weather makes a comeback in Napa County just in time for spring break and Easter! I can’t remember the last time we had no rain in the month of March, but here it is on the last day! So what’s good to plant in April in 2026?

Short answer: the same seeds and seedlings we’ve nurtured all March long are still good to plant in April. As the official final frost date approaches (April 15) for our county, there’s lots to do! A little strategic planning can make the best of this energetic time. Try hand removing hungry insects that are starting to nibble at your seedlings. If you have them, transplant a couple of tomato seedlings. (I typically wait until mid-April though). You can direct sow cucumbers and beans, but be sure to watch and protect them with row cover to avoid damage from insects, birds, and the occasional cold night as they emerge.

¡El tiempo lluvioso vuelve al condado de Napa justo a tiempo para las vacaciones de primavera y la Semana Santa! No recuerdo la última vez que no llovió en marzo, ¡pero aquí está, justo el último día! Entonces, ¿qué es lo mejor para plantar en abril de 2026?

Respuesta breve: las mismas semillas y plántulas que hemos cuidado durante todo el mes de marzo siguen siendo adecuadas para plantar en abril. A medida que se acerca la fecha oficial de la última helada (15 de abril) en nuestro condado, ¡hay mucho que hacer!
