Because International Because International is a nonprofit that alleviates poverty through The Shoe That Grows and the Because Accelerator.

Because International started in 2007 when founder Kenton Lee visited Nairobi, Kenya and noticed a little girl wearing shoes that didn't fit her feet—sparking his idea for The Shoe That Grows, a shoe that expands five sizes and lasts for yers. Did you know The Shoe That Grows is made in Kenya? Did you know that Because has four team members there? We’re excited to be showing you more of this team and what they do day-to-day. Japheth, our Regional and Logistics Product Lead, spent some time last week at our factory in Mombasa, Kenya, doing quality control checks. He’s an expert on The Shoe, doing quality assurance at the factory and in the field—monitoring how the shoes work at all stages of their use. Thank you, Japheth, for helping us ensure The Shoe That Grows continues to be the best solution for kids in Kenya and around the world who are experiencing shoelessness!

Jiggers are tiny parasitic fleas that burrow into bare skin, usually the feet, leaving behind painful, festering sores that can easily become infected.

One school in Machakos County, Kenya has been fighting these pests for a long time, only to see them return time after time. But, last month, they received reinforcements that will protect their students for years to come.

Why will this matter?

Education is a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty. Shoes protect feet from injury and infection on long, rocky and hot walks to school. By eliminating this one barrier, kids are more likely to go to school, stay in school and go on to achieve their goals.👏🏼 It's a small thing that matters in a BIG way. If you've ever wondered if The Shoe That Grows takes up too much room in a Christmas shoebox, we have great news! At our Christmas in July party at our warehouse in Idaho, we had so many fun visitors and activities, but the shoebox packing challenge was our favorite! We asked all the kids (and some grown-ups) to pack a Christmas shoebox with The Shoe That Grows as their WOW item. Let me tell you, the kids know how to do it! One kid got 99 items (toys, shirts, socks, shoe charms, pencils, notebooks, toothbrushes) in a standard-sized shoebox alongside The Shoe—showing that with a little creativity, it can be done!
