Our hearts are heavy for Bend, Oregon, following the tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. No child, teacher, or family should ever have to experience fear or violence in a place meant for learning and growth.

While there is much to say about this type of tragedy, today, we will focus on lifting the Bend Community up with love and prayer .

Here is a quote gathered from one of the counselors in our program, "We had a very angry young boy, he never took responsibility for his behavior, whether his homework wasn't done or he punched somebody-he could always tell you why it was someone's fault. I reached out to the MN and got him a mentor, and his behavior and attitude improved. After 3 months with a mentor, he started taking responsibility. This mentor changed the kind of man he's going to become. He will be a man who takes responsibility for his actions versus the track he was on. If you look at the trajectory, the changes may seem very small at first, but in terms of what they mean down the line-these changes create a very different life path. Those little tiny changes, if you can just knock someone off their course 3 degrees, it's not a lot at first, but years down the line that's a huge difference in where they've ended up, and who they've ended up being. What this program does is powerful."

Team Spotlight💡: Marci Ormsby Silva, Executive Director

What has your professional journey been with The Mentoring Network?

I started as a volunteer mentor with The Mentoring Network in 2015. I really loved everything about the organization! I joined the board of directors in 2020. That same year I became board chair. Over time, as Donna, Gretta, and I talked about program continuity, I knew that I wanted to be a bigger part of this amazing organization! I stepped into the Executive Director role in August of 2024. Every moment of this journey has been full of blessings and meaningful memories, I love what I do every day!

What is one memory from mentoring you want others to hear?

There are so many things I'd like to share. I think that one of the most impactful moments for me was with my mentee "A". We were matched in 2015 when she was in second grade. She's an adult now and we met for lunch. As we were talking she asked me if I was rich. I laughed and assured her that I definitely am not rich. Her response was "then how did you afford to do it? How were you there for me every day when I was growing up?" I responded "I worked full time, it was one hour, one time a week." Her reply will forever be in my heart "That doesn't make sense. How could you be my best friend if it was just one hour a week!?" That day I walked away with a full heart and the realization of the true impact one hour a week makes!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about mentoring with The Mentoring Network?

Give yourself this gift. The requirements are simple, you show up, listen, care, and are a friend. You will change multiple lives in the process, including yours. If that sounds like something you can do, you belong on our team!

This day encourages communities to understand how various life aspects profoundly shape a child’s adulthood and future while also highlighting the importance of providing children with safe environments, access to education, healthcare, and positive role models. Take time to support the young people in your life, volunteer with a youth organization, or advocate for policies that protect children’s minds, bodies, and souls.

Another heartfelt response from a mentee:

I'd like to keep my mentor because when we meet she's like a person who understands people and doesn't judge. She has been through a lot of things in her life. She gives advice, lets me know I am not alone, and gives me lessons on life.

To my mentor: I want to thank you for showing me ways to handle situations and ways to control myself. You have shown me what being a good friend looks like.
